More news about: Dominican

The Dominican University women's basketball team improved upon its best start since the early 1990s with a 79-68 win over the Rockford College Regents on Tuesday night, to move to 7-1 on the season and a perfect 3-0 in Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) play.  The Stars, trailing by as many as six early in the second half, used a 14-0 run, sparked by a three-point play by junior guard Kayla Blom (Circle Pines, Minn.) followed by a three-pointer from Becky Christofferson (Summit, S.D.), to open a 60-48 lead with just 7:36 to play.

After the Regents stopped the run with lay in by Megan Lawler, freshman Ashley Oliver knocked down a three to give the Stars their biggest lead of the game at 63-50 and Dominican sealed the victory at the free throw line, converting on 22 of the team's 23 trips to the foul line, including knocking down ten free throws in the final 1:08.

Christofferson led all scorers with a game-high 22 points on 6-for-15 shooting from the field while going 4-for-10 from three-point range and a perfect 6-for-6 at the charity stripe.  Blom added 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while junior Sarah Budz (Orland Park, Ill.) and Oliver tallied 14 and 12 points respectively in the winning effort.

Britney Curry paced the Regents with 18 points and Lawler chipped in 15 points.

Dominican shot 43.3 percent (26-60) from the field, going 5-for-16 from the field, while Rockford managed to shoot just 36.4 percent (24-66) from the field and 33.3 percent (3-9) from three.

The Stars will look for the eighth straight win on Thursday night when they host the MSOE Raiders for a 7:00 p.m. tip in the Igini Sports Forum.
