Unbeaten Eastern Connecticut State Topples Westfield State, 74-49

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore reserve guard Jessica Blodgett (Niantic, CT) scored a team high 13 points and forwards Tanisha Carter (East Hartford, CT) and Piper Chapman (Portsmouth, RBI) both posted double-doubles to pace nationally ranked Eastern Connecticut State University to a 74-49 non-conference women's basketball victory over Westfield State University on Tuesday, Dec. 7.

The Warriors, ranked No. 23 in this week's NCAA Division III national poll, remain unbeaten at 7-0. Westfield drops to 5-3.

Carter (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Chapman (10 points, 11 rebounds) powered the inside game as Eastern Connecticut outrebounded Westfield, 47-24. The talented, deep and athletic Warriors also excelled at the free throw line, with nine players canning a combined 23 of 27 attempts. Westfield, meanwhile, was 6-for-7 from the charity stripe.

The Owls stayed with the visitors in the early going, but like all outstanding teams the Warriors went on several scoring runs. Tied at 18-all, Eastern Connecticut outscored Westfield, 16-4, in the final 9:30 of the first half to take a 34-22 at the intermission.

Westfield cut the lead to seven points, 37-30, in the opening two minutes of the second half, highlighted by senior forward Ashley Finnegan's (Worcester/Holy Name HS) 1,000th career point.

Finnegan entered the game with 990 points, including 570 markers her first two seasons when she played at Division II Mercy (NY) College. She had six points at halftime and quickly reached the magic milestone in the second half. She hit a jumper at 19:49 and made two free throws at 19:05. She finished with a game-high 14 points and a team high seven rebounds.

Eastern Connecticut then went on another scoring run to seal the victory, outscoring Westfield, 13-2, for a commanding 50-32 lead with 11:49 remaining.

Also scoring in double figures for the winners were senior guard Brittany Whiteley (Windsor Locks, CT) with 11 points and senior forward Amanda Pierlioni (Plainville, CT) with 10. Senior guard Jessica Moriarty (East Haven, CT) finished with eight points and eight rebounds.

Senior forward Cassy Jouannet (Conway/Frontier Regional) and sophomore guard Courtney DelRatez (Adams/Hoosac Valley) both scored 11 points for Westfield.
