CNU Sails Past Peace College in USA South Action, 95-47

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Five different players were in double figures and the Captains shot a torrid 54.4% from the field to breeze past the Peace College Pacers (3-3, 0-2) today, in USA South Conference action, 95-47. Christopher Newport, ranked third in the country, improved to 5-0 overall with the win, and 2-0 in league play.

CNU held an unbelievably dominant advantage in the paint, outscoring the Pacers 60-8 close to the basket. CNU's bench also held a commanding edge, scoring 61 points in the game. The victory was the 27th straight at the Freeman Center, dating back to the 2008-09 season.

The Captains defense held Peace without a basket in the first 9:36, jumping out to a 22-3 lead early in the first half.  CNU would get the lead up to 27 in the first half, 48-21, before finally taking a 25-point lead at the break.

In the second half, CNU would continue to stretch the lead, using a team effort. Five different players, let by Chelsie Schweers with 15. Rookies Nicole Mitchell and Tia Perry each set new career-highs, with 14 and 13 points respectively. Sophomore Kelly Halverson and senior Jessica Moore rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 and 10 each.

Mitchell added eight rebounds and finished the day 5-of-6 shooting. She added three assists, three steals and a block to fill the stat sheet for the Captains. Jen Falin also had a great day, with nine points, two assists and 1 steal in 13 minutes of action. The bench scored 61 of the 95 points in the game and all but two Captains found their way onto the scoreboard in the game.

Peace was led by Rachel Lyons with 11 points on 5-7 shooting. Maya Sloan added seven for teh Pacers, while Crystal Alston's five points, five assists and four rebounds came off the bench.

CNU will take off the week for final exams before hosting Meredith College in USA South action next Sunday, December 12 at 2:00 pm.
