Hendrix survives for 61-54 win over Colorado in SCAC opener

CONWAY, Ark. (Dec. 3) -- Hendrix College first year Jamie Tate recorded a 12 point, 15 rebound double-double to lead the Warriors to a 61-54 victory over Colorado College in their Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) opener on Friday night at Grove Gymnasium.

Hendrix (4-3, 1-0 SCAC) found a way to win despite shooting just 32.7 percent from the field, compared to Colorado's (1-5, 0-1 SCAC) 38.0 percentage. The difference came down low as the Warriors outscored the Tigers 26-20 in the paint and earned a 37-31 advantage on the boards.

Hendrix survived 10 ties and 16 lead changes, earning the final advantage on a jumper from Tate with 3:05 left in regulation. Senior Wyvonne Hawkins turned the momentum in the Warriors' favor two minutes later with a 3-point play the hard way, putting Hendrix on top 55-51 with 1:11 to go.

The match was close the entire way as neither team managed to stretch its lead past five points until Hendrix led by six (57-51) in the final minute. The two teams took a 34-34 tie into the break.

Tate was 5-of-9 from the field and pulled down 12 defensive boards. Junior Anna Roane added 12 points with a pair of 3-pointers and 6-of-6 shooting from the charity stripe. Junior Katy Ashley-Pauley tallied 11 points and dished out a team-high seven assists. Hendrix totaled 12 steals and scored 20 points off Colorado turnovers.

Sophomore Kalli Kemling led Colorado with 22 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field, including 4-of-4 from behind the arc. Junior Becky Leutjen was the Tigers' only other player in double figures with 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Hendrix will be back in action on Sunday as they host Austin College at 1 p.m. CT in another SCAC match-up.
