Women's Basketball Drops Road Contest at Montclair State University

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The Cabrini women's basketball team remains in pursuit of its first win in 2010-11 following a 71-39 setback at New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponent Montclair State University on Tuesday night. Freshman guard Brittany Sandone led the Cavaliers' offense for the second time in three games, scoring nine points in the loss.

Freshman guard MaryKate McCann provided the Blue & White with eight points and five rebounds in 25 minutes of play off the bench. Freshman guard Amanda Cundari chipped in five points.

Second-year head coach Kate Pearson got a herculean effort from freshman forward Colleen Stewart on the glass. The Cavaliers out-rebounded the Red Hawks, 53-49, led by a game-high 14 from Stewart.

Freshman forward Maggie McElroy and freshman forward Michelle Petronaci also pulled down six boards.

Montclair State sprinted to a commanding 24-5 lead off the opening tip. The Red Hawks led 29-11 at the 6:52 mark of the first half.

Yet, Cabrini closed the opening period on a 9-2 run and pulled within 11 points, 31-20, at the intermission. Freshman guard Leithie Faison capped the spurt with a lay-in with 14 seconds remaining.

The Cavaliers kept MSU at arms length to begin the second half and trailed by 11 points, 39-28, at the 14:37 mark after sophomore forward Melissa Kudzmas knocked down a jumper.

However, a 12-0 run from the Red Hawks over the four-plus minutes supplied the hosts with a 51-28 cushion at the 10:18 mark.

Senior forward Kisandra Ayanbeku led Montclair State, posting a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Junior guard Jaime Erickson scored a game-high 22 points, collected eight boards and secured five steals.

Cabrini (0-3) remains on the road and begins it Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) regular season slate at the College of Notre Dame on Monday, Nov. 29. Game time versus the Gators is set for 7 p.m.
