NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Entering the game just 26 points shy of Karen Barefoot's all-time scoring record, senior Chelsie Schweers already had a firm grasp on her place in history at CNU, but behind a dominant second half and a perfect 6-for-6 night shooting from long range, she erased that gap and more, finishing with 31 points and an even more clear place in CNU history. Schweers led CNU to an impressive 82-38 victory over #15 Messiah College (3-2) en route to becoming the Captains new all-time leading scorer.

Karen Barefoot's 2,073 points held up for over 16 years before Schweers overtook the mark today. Barefoot graduated in 1994 and became the first player ever, men's or women's, to record 2,000 points and 1,000 assists. Schweers now has 2,078 points for first all time, trailing only Lamont Strothers (2,709) in CNU men's and women's basketball history.

The Captains jumped out to an 12-point lead in the first half, led by Jessica Moore on the glass with seven early rebounds and an impressive defensive effort from senior Barbara Davis, who had three blocks and three steals in the opening stanza.

Messiah, though, would storm back at the end of the half, closing on a 19-7 run to tie it up, 29-29 at halftime. Dori Gyori led the way for the Falcons, scoring six points and hauling in 10 rebounds in the first half.

The second half was a much different story though, as the Captains put on a show, both offensively and defensively. The Captains held the Falcons to just nine points in the second half on 4-of-26 shooting (.154), forcing 14 second-half turnovers. CNU outscored Messiah 53-9 in the second half to run away with a 82-32 victory.  Offensively, Schweers, who was held to just seven points in the first half, went off for 24 in the second 20 minutes, finishing with a game-high 31. Schweers went 6-for-6 from long range and was 12-of-15 overall.

The Captains controlled the paint, scoring 42 points near the basket, compared to Messiah's 24. CNU finished with seven blocks on the day, including a career-high-tying five from Davis. Moore would add seven points and six rebounds, giving her a career-high-tying mark in rebounds with 13 total. Davis finished with a double-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds and also added the five blocks, four steals and two assists.

Gyori led the way for Messiah, with eight points and 11 rebounds, while Taylor Miller added a team-high 11 points.

Christopher Newport improves to 3-0 overall this season with the win over the nationally ranked opponent. The Captains hit the road for their next game, the USA South opener this Wednesday, December 1 at Shenandoah University.
