WAVERLY – A 17-8 run to open the second half helped lift Wartburg College to a 64-57 win over Grinnell Nov. 27.

Coach Bob Amsberry's Knights, improving to 4-0, trailed the visiting Pioneers 32-27 at the break. However, the Orange and Black put the clamps on Grinnell's offense in the second frame with some strong pressure to aid the comeback. Grinnell, 1-2, hit only seven-of-23 field goal attempts in the half, while the Knights out-rebounded them 21-18 and turned in seven steals to spark a 35-27 scoring advantage.

Freshman forward Carly Jacobs of Allison topped the point chart with 16 points which included an eight-of-10 outing at the free throw line. Senior guard Samantha Harrington Nashua ended with 13 points and a team-best six assists. Other big numbers belonged to junior guard Stephanie Reiter of LaPorte City (six assists) and sophomore forward Maddie Sadecky of Iowa City (seven rebounds).

Jessica Vaverka (13 points) and Karen Gogins (11 points) led Grinnell in scoring.

Wartburg opens 2010-11 Iowa Conference play Wednesday, Dec. 1, with a 6 p.m. tip-off against Cornell College of Mount Vernon in Levick Arena.

Notes – Amsberry's crew is off to the program's best since the 2007-08 squad jumped out to a 6-1 beginning.
