SPARTAN WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM SUFFERS FIRST LOSS, 69-62, TO BALDWIN-WALLACE

CLEVELAND, OH – Despite a game-high 20 points from sophomore guard Evy Iacono (Cincinnati, OH/Mount Notre Dame), the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season by a score of 69-62 to visiting Baldwin-Wallace College on Tuesday, November 23 at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

With the loss, the Spartans fall to 3-1 overall and will return to action next Wednesday, December 1 at Kenyon College at 7:30 p.m. With its win, B-W improves to 3-1.

Baldwin-Wallace held the Spartans scoreless for more than five minutes and led 8-0 when Olivia French hit a pull-up jumper at the 15:15 mark. The Spartans got on the board at 14:40 when Iacono nailed a three-pointer to bring the score to 8-3.

The Spartans chipped away and later tied the score at 12-12 when Iacono hit two free throws at 11:25. B-W came back with a 9-1 run and led 22-13 when Kristen Troyer made a pair of free throws with 5:45 left in the half. Case briefly cut its deficit to 22-19 with two more Iacono charity shots at 4:31, but the Jackets were able to rebuild their advantage to a high of 14 when Catherine Spisak connected on two free throws with 00:10 left on the clock. The Spartans got a last second tip-in from junior forward Erin Hollinger (Chardon, OH/Chardon) to make the score 35-23.

The B-W lead grew to a high of 17 points, at 40-23, when Jessica Carpenter connected on a three-pointer at 18:40 of the second half. The Spartans hung around and got to within eight, at 49-41, when senior forward Caitlin Henry (Fairfax, VA/Robinson) made a layup at 9:57. The Yellow Jackets responded once again and got their lead to 14, at 62-48, when Jessica Lairson hit a pair of free throws with 3:02 remaining. Case battled back and trimmed its deficit to six, at 65-59, when Hollinger hit a layup with 00:42 left on the clock. However, the Jackets were able to hit four free throws down the stretch to secure the 69-62 win.

For the game B-W connected on 26-of-29 (89.7 percent) free throws compared to 15-of-20 (75%) for Case.

Iacono's 20 points were accompanied by six rebounds and three steals. Sophomore guard Eric Iafelice (North Canton, OH/Hoover) totaled 13 points and four boards, while Hollinger and Henry each scored 11. 

The Yellow Jackets were led by Carpenter with 13 points, Amanda Schroeder with 12 points and eight boards, and French with 10.
