FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Host Mary Washington led throughout in a 69-48 non-conference women's basketball victory over Shenandoah Tuesday evening.
The No. 17 in the nation Eagles (2-2) got a measure of revenge with the 21-point victory over Shenandoah (1-3) as the Hornets downed UMW in Winchester last season.
A second straight upset was not to be in the offing - Mary Washington scored the first five points of the game and expanded its lead into double-digits by the 13:34 mark of the first.
The hosts kept up the pressure, leading by at least seven points for the remainder of the first and finishing the half on a 15-4 run.
Guard Jenna McRae did most of this damage, scoring 16 of her game-high 20 points in the opening stanza.
SU continued to battle following the break, but the Eagles lead proved too difficult to overcome. Mary Washington held at least a 19-point advantage and had a 28-point lead midway through the second.
Coach Michelle Guyant-Holloway played 15 women in the loss with freshman Arianna Beard leading the way with 13 points and senior Sierra Edwards adding 10.
Beard also had a team-high seven rebounds for the Hornets, who lost the battle of the glass 41-40.
McRae had 20 to pace the victors.
Shenandoah is back in action this Sunday at 6 p.m. in a non-conference contest against Hood.
