CCNY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM FALLS IN CONSOLATION GAME OF DICKINSON TOURNAMENT

The City College of New York women's basketball team (0-2 Overall, 0-0 CUNYAC) dropped its second consecutive game to begin the 2010-2011 campaign, falling to Mary Baldwin in the consolation game of the Dickinson College Tournament by a score of 70-52 Sunday afternoon at Dickinson's Kline Center in Carlisle, PA.

The first six minutes and 40 seconds of the contest saw both teams battle, with neither squad taking a lead by more than four points. CCNY's final lead of the afternoon came with 11:09 remaining in the first session, as Simone Tharkur connected on a layup to give the Beavers a 15-14 advantage. The Fighting Squirrels would take the lead for good with 9:27 left in the first half when Denise Johnson would convert on a layup to give Mary Baldwin a 16-15 lead. The Fighting Squirrels would gradually build their lead as the first half wound down, eventually taking a 35-25 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

In the second stanza, Mary Baldwin College built its lead up to 22 before eventually solidifying an 18 point victory. The Fighting Squirrels grabbed 11 rebounds on the offensive glass and scored seven second-chance points in the second session, while the Beavers snatched two offensive caroms and weren't able to score any second-chance points. Mary Baldwin also scored 11 points off of Beaver turnovers in the second half, while CCNY only scored three points off of Fighting Squirrel miscues in the second stanza.

Despite the loss for the Beavers, CCNY had three players in double figures, including Syreeta Williams who netted a team-high 15 points on seven-of-13 shooting to go along with six rebounds and a pair of blocks. Taryn VanEsselstyn posted a double-double by dropping in 13 points and snatching 10 boards, and Alexis Jackson netted 10 points and dished three assists.

In the victory for Mary Baldwin, four players scored in double figures, including Denise Johnson who had a stellar game, connecting on seven of her 11 shots from the field while accounting for game-highs in points with 16, rebounds with 13, steals with eight, and assists with five. Sabrina Desper added 14 points, 11 rebounds, and three steals, and Iesha Ricks had 11 points and six rebounds. Finally, it was Ericka Brown with 10 points and five rebounds.

The Beavers connected on 41.7 percent of their shots for the contest (20-48) while holding Mary Baldwin to 36 percent from the floor for the afternoon (27-75). The Fighting Squirrels dominated the glass, out-rebounding CCNY by a margin of 59-33, including a 27-5 edge on the offensive glass. The Beavers committed 27 turnovers compared to 21 for Mary Baldwin, and Mary Baldwin also had 14 steals while CCNY had five.

The Beavers will return to action on Tuesday evening as the squad will take to the road to battle Rutgers-Newark University for a non-conference contest, with start-time scheduled for 6:00pm.
