PLU Rally Falls Short in 73-68 Loss to Concordia

PARKLAND - Pacific Lutheran rallied from a 10-point second half deficit to pull within two points in the late going, but the visiting Concordia Cavaliers held off the Lutes, 73-68, in a non-conference women's basketball game played Saturday night in Olson Auditorium.

Concordia, which improved its season record to 5-3, took a 65-55 leads on Courtney May's jumper with 7:32 remaining in the game. Pacific Lutheran responded with a 10-2 run, culminated by Mandy Wall's layup with 1:28 left, to make it 67-65. PLU had a chance to tie it with just inside of one minute left but missed the shot.

That's when May took over for Concordia. First, she had an assist on a Rachel Scarpelli basket, and then after a PLU miss on the other end, hit two foul shots to make it 71-65. After another PLU miss, she grabbed the rebound, was fouled, and made two more charity tosses. PLU's Jordan Westering hit a three-point shot with three seconds left to close out the scoring.

The visitors from Portland led by as many as nine points in the first half, 24-15, before the Lutes ran off 12 of the next 15 points to tie the score at 27-27. Shelly Kilcup fueled the run with a pair of three-point shots. PLU took its first lead of the game on Melissa Pixler's three-point field goal from the right wing with 1:12 left in the first half. PLU eventually took a 37-35 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Concordia regained the lead for good at 46-44 on Traci Thompson's layup with 15:05 left in the game.

Kilcup came off the bench to hit all four of her three-point attempts and lead the Lutes with 16 points. Samantha Potter had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds in addition to four steals, and Pixler added 11 points for PLU. Sara Backstrom had six assists for the Lutes.

Danielle Clauson tied Kilcup for game-high scoring honors with 16 points, and she was joined in double-figure scoring by Scarpelli with 14, May with 13 and Megan Padilla with 11. May led her team wtih seven rebounds and seven assists.
