GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. – Gwynedd-Mercy held Stevenson to one field goal in the last 2:57 as the Griffins hung tough to pick up their first win of the season in a 58-52 win over the Mustangs in the second game of the Residence Inn by Marriott/GMC Tip-Tournament Friday night at the Griffin Complex.

GM (1-1) will take on Delaware Valley, who were 77-72 winners over Moravian in the evening's first contest, tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the championship game. Stevenson and the Greyhounds will battle in the consolation game at noon.

The Griffins almost had three players finish with double-doubles. Senior Kristy McGrath totaled a team-high 18 points with 10 rebounds. Freshman Natasha Matthews had 10 points and 10 boards while junior Brittany Neill scored 15 points and had nine rebounds.

Thanks to a 12-0 run midway in the first half, Gwynedd would later lead by as much as 14 after Matthews' bucket and ensuing foul and three throw to make it a 32-18 GM lead with 3:51 in the stanza. The Griffins would go into the locker room up 34-23 at the break.

The start of the second half saw Stevenson (0-2) open up the period on a 15-6 run to pull within just two with over 12 minutes to play.

Neill gave GM some breathing room hitting back-to-back treys for a 46-38 edge two minutes later.

But the Mustangs would not go away, as they would not trail by more than eight points the rest of the way. Stevenson's Ryshell Parker's bucket finally knotted the contest at 51-51 with 2:57 left, but the Griffin defense clamped down to hold the Mustangs without a bucket for the remainder of the game.

Parker finished with 11 points, while teammate Jaquelia Conley netted 12. Kristen Steiner had just five points, but pulled in a game-high 20 points and added five assists, two blocks and two steals.

Each team shot under 30% while the Mustangs outrebounded GM, 52-49 , however Gwynedd committed just 14 turnovers compared to Stevenson's 19.
