GVC tops Sage at Buffalo State Tournament

Buffalo, NY---The Sage Colleges women's basketball team travelled to Buffalo State College on Friday night to compete at the 2010 Betty Abgott Invitational. In the opening contest of the tournament, Sage faced Grove City College and dropped the contest, 62-53. Grove City advances to the Championships game and stands at 1-1 on the season, while Sage drops to 0-2 on the young season and will play in the consolation game.

  

Sage lead by six points early in the first half before the Wolverines exploded for a strong run at the mid-way point of the half and lead by 15 at the break, 38-23. After trailing by 17 points, Sage erupted for 14 straight to open the second half of play and chipped away at the Wolverine lead and cut in to just one point, down 38-37 at the 13:41 mark as the held GVC scoreless for the first six and a half minutes of action.  Sage stayed tight and lead by one point, 52-51 with 4:22 left to play but was held scoreless for the rest of the contest.

 

For GVC, senior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, PA/Center) had 17 of her 26 points in the first half to lead all scorers in the contest.  Junior guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) added 15 points, while sophomore guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, OH/Hoover) tallied 13 points.

 

Sage's rookie forward Chelsea Martin (Davenport, NY/Jefferson Central) had a career-high 14 points after leading the Gators with nine first half points. She added seven rebounds with four steals and shot 6-18 from the floor. Sophomore forward Kara Hackett (Peru, NY/Peru Central) tallied 13 points, while senior Jessica Byerwalters (Coeymans Hollow, NY/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) finished with 12 points after connecting for 10 in the second half of play.

 

Sage returns to action on November 20 at the Betty Abgott Tip-Off Tournament at Buffalo State College. Sage will face the loser of the contest between Hilbert and Buffalo State College in the consolation game at noon        on Saturday.
