RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini women's basketball team opened its 2010-11 regular season schedule on Monday night at Nerney Field House, suffering a 57-48 loss against Commonwealth Conference opponent Widener University. Freshman guard Brittany Sandone, one of four first-year Cavaliers to earn a start, led the team with 13 points.

Junior guard Laura Caron contributed 12 points and six rebounds. Senior guard Julie Bonomo and freshman forward Annie Rivituso each chipped in with six points.

Sophomore forward Melissa Kudzmas corralled six rebounds, while freshman Colleen Stewart grabbed five boards.

The Cavaliers staked claim to a 29-27 advantage at the intermission behind all 12 points from Caron. Sandone netted five points in the opening 20 minutes.

Cabrini trailed for more than 14 minutes in the opening period until a 10-3 run to close out the half supplied the hosts with a two-point advantage.

However, the Cavaliers shot just 16.7 percent from the floor in the second half. Widener sophomore guard Lil Carney's hoop-and-the-harm three-point play at the 14:55 mark broke a 33-33 tie and handed the Pride a lead it would never relinquish.

The Blue & White pulled within three points at the 4:52 mark following a rebound and lay-in from Rivitus on the fastbreak. But, Widener answered with four straight, pushing its lead back to seven points, 52-45, with 3:18 on the clock.

Carney led the Pride offense with 16 points. Sophomore Vanesssa Hejnas paired eight points with a game-high 11 rebounds.

Cabrini (0-1) remains at Nerney Field House for a date with Freedom Conference opponent DeSales University on Wednesday, Nov. 17. Game time against the Bulldogs is set for 6 p.m.
