Double Trouble! Otterbein Escapes Marietta in Second OT for Season Sweep

MARIETTA, Ohio – It took 50 minutes of a thrilling rematch Wednesday night down at Marietta, but the Otterbein men's basketball team overcame some adverse moments to officially notch a season sweep over the Pioneers behind a 90-88 score in double overtime.

The Cardinals, previously snapping a 20-game losing skid in the series with Marietta earlier this season, made it a 2-for-1 special and now sit in a tie for third place (with Heidelberg) in the OAC standings. Both teams are also now just one game back of second-place Mount Union.

QUICK HITTERS:

  • Otterbein trailed by nine points with 90 seconds left before hitting three consecutive three-pointers – Julian Heckman at 1:13, and then back-to-back daggers from Jack Clement in the closing minute.

  • The Cards (down 84-81) forced a defensive stop with 22 seconds remaining and eventually watched Clement dribble to the left wing, rise between a pair of defenders and send the game to double overtime with his game-tying trifecta.

  • All remaining points took place early in the second OT, as neither team ended up scoring over the final three minutes of the night. Chase Garito represented four of those, the latter being a layup on a nice dump-feed down low to give his team the culminating 90-88 cushion.

KEY MOMENTS PRIOR:

  • The Cardinals led 25-18 midway through the first half before enduring a scoreless drought of more than six minutes. Marietta pieced together an 18-0 run during the span and eventually carried a 36-30 edge into the break.

  • Otterbein played from almost the entire second half but never went away, trailing by double digits on a few occasions before regaining a 66-65 lead (on a layup from Reece Huber) with 4:46 to play. That capped a critical 13-2 run.

  • Ties at 68-68 and 70-70 ensued before Alex Hannah buried a huge triple with 49 seconds left. Marietta then answered with 28 seconds on the clock as Otterbein was able to hold for the last shot of regulation…

  • Clement used a ball screen to his left and fed a pass to the corner for Cam Evans, who beat an initial defender before his layup was blocked just before the horn sounded. The Pioneers used that momentum to create a three-possession lead in the first overtime but, as you read up above, Otterbein admirably responded with its back against the wall…

BOX SCORE NOTABLES:

  • Clement led everyone with 26 points on 10 of 20 shooting across his game-high 45 minutes. He also corralled a season-high nine rebounds.

  • Five Cardinals scored double figures overall with Garito (17), Evans (15), Julian Heckman (12) and Alex Hannah scoring 11. Both Garito and Heckman grabbed eight boards each to help on the glass.

  • Otterbein shot 49% from the field on the night and continues leading the OAC in the team category.

  • The efficient Cardinals once again did almost all offensive damage from the field as they shot just a few at the charity stripe. In fact, the group has attempted just 16 free throws across the last three outings.

  • The two sides combined to chuck 69 shots from behind the arc.

  • Sahmi Willoughby had 21 and 13 to lead the home side, which shot just 1 of 7 in the second overtime.

SENIOR SATURDAY:

  • The Cardinals finish out the week at home in the Rike Center against Muskingum as part of Senior Day. Clement, Evans, Brennan Rains, Sean Marks and star videographer Jake Spegal will be recognized prior to tip at 1 p.m.
