Christopher Newport Downs Salisbury on Senior Day, 75-63...Senior Jahn Hines Leads the Way With 17 Points

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University never trailed Saturday, as the 25th-ranked Captains improved to 18-5 with a 75-63 victory over Salisbury University. The win at the Freeman Center in front of 1,359 fans came on Senior Day following a pre-game ceremony to honor five CNU seniors.

One of those seniors, All-American Jahn Hines, led the way in scoring with 17 points, while another, fifth-year senior Ian Anderson, topped the squad in rebounding with nine.

"I thought all of our seniors really contributed a lot to our win today," Head Coach John Krikorian said following the win. "Jake Latta really got us off to a good start with some outstanding defense, and Jahn, Ian, and Trey Barber all had some really good moments at both ends of the court. Overall, I thought we played pretty well, we had a little spell in the second half when they made a run, but we were able to hold them off and get the win."

The Captains jumped out to a 5-0 lead, and built the advantage to as many as 13 in the opening half before taking a 12-point edge to the locker room at the break, 36-24. CNU opened the second half with a 17-10 run to push the lead to 19, 53-34, with 12:12 to play. The Sea Gulls, now 12-10, whittled the lead down to eight in the final minutes but could get no closer. The loss was the third straight for SU.

Sophomore Collin Hines and freshman Toa Hollenbeck each netted 15 points to join Jahn Hines in double figures in the scoring column. The Captains knocked down seven three-pointers and out-rebounded the Gulls for the day, 42-35.

In addition to the four seniors who saw action for the Captains on Saturday, CNU also honored senior Devon Parrish, who has missed most of the season due to an early-season knee injury.

"This is a very special group that has accomplished so much over their careers here," Krikorian continued. "They've really set a new standard, and we're certainly going to miss them."

Senior Jordan Oates led Salisbury with 17 points and 11 rebounds. The victory was the 14th straight for the Captains over the Sea Gulls dating back to the 2016-17 season, and CNU now holds a 37-15 edge in the all-time series. The teams will meet again in Salisbury, Md., on Saturday, February 17th in the regular-season finale for both squads.

The Captains are now 11-2 at home this season, and CNU has compiled a record of 72-5 at the Freeman Center since the start of the 2018-19 season. Christopher Newport will host the Eagles of the University of Mary Washington next Saturday in the final home game of the regular season. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. CNU defeated Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, 59-57, on January 17th.
