Hope wins at Kalamazoo

Tanner Wiegerink buried a 3 to open the second half for the Hope College men's basketball team at Kalamazoo College.

Parker Hovey quickly followed with another one, and the Flying Dutchmen soon delivered a decisive surge.

Hope marched to a 76-66 road victory on Saturday after breaking a tie score by producing a 14-0 run after halftime. The Hornets never got closer than nine points.

The Flying Dutchmen (15-6, 7-3 MIAA) remained in contention for a first-round bye in the MIAA Tournament with the victory. Hope trails second-place Calvin University by one game with four games remaining. The top two seeds claim first-round byes.

Wiegerink (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa HS) led four Flying Dutchmen in double figures with 19 points. The senior also grabbed seven rebounds.

Junior forward TJ McKenzie (Muskegon, Michigan / North Muskegon) and sophomore guard Marcus Wourman chipped in 11 points apiece. Wourman also recorded a team-high three assists.

Senior guard Clayton Dykhouse (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) added 10 points. Junior center Gave Quillan (Ada, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central) collected nine points and a team-best nine rebounds.

Sophomore guard Justice Mims (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Rochester Adams) scored nine points.

Head coach Greg Mitchell was proudest of how the Flying Dutchmen kept Kalamazoo (9-12, 3-7 MIAA) scoreless for the first 5 ½ minutes of the second half.

"They're hard to guard. They've got a system where you've got 3-point shooters and spread the floor," Mitchell said. "We guarded a little harder (than in the first half). We went over at halftime how we were communicating. That was a critical start to the second half because we raised our defensive identity."

The halftime score stood at 39-all. Kalamazoo's Gabe Sharp came off the bench to score 18 of his game-high 21 points during the first half. Sharp shot 87.5% from the field (7-of-8) with two 3-pointers and 2-of-2 from the free-throw line.

Offensively, Hope found better success by getting the basketball into the paint.

While Wiegerink and Hovey opened the second half with 3-pointers, the open looks developed after Kalamazoo collapsed their defense inside. The Flying Dutchmen attempted only four 3s the entire second half (2-4) after shooting 21.4% from 3-point range during the first half (3-14).

Hope's 14-0 effort also featured layups from Wourman, Dykhouse, Quillan and Wiegerink. Kalamazoo ended the Flying Dutchmen's run on a Ty Horky jumper at the 14:21 mark.

"We were too content with perimeter shots, 14 3s in the first half is just too many," Mitchell said. "We got the ball inside a little more."

Hope opens a three-game homestand on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at 7:30 p.m. against Adrian College at DeVos Fieldhouse.
