Four Quakers in Double Figures, Guilford Fends off Ferrum

The eighth-ranked Quakers took the court on Wednesday night, facing off against Ferrum College. The Panthers hung around for most of the contest, but the home side proved to be stronger, pulling away for a final score of 67-55.

Guilford (17-2, 8-2)  and Ferrum (13-6, 4-6) traded baskets continuously during the first period, with the home side unable to claim a lead larger than five through the first 10 minutes of play. A three-pointer from Panther Zavier Measmer kept the contest within two (14-12).

After the first media timeout, the Quakers found their groove with a 10-0 run over the next three minutes, boosting their lead by 10 (26-16). The underdog Panthers refused to be counted out, replying with a few scores of their own, the last being a three-pointer to cut their deficit to six, heading into halftime. Guilford led, 29-23.

The visitors outscored the home team 16-10 to open the second, and eventually knotted up the contest at 39 at the 13-minute mark. From here, Guilford replied immediately with seven straight points. This included three straight free-throw makes from Tyler Dearman after getting fouled from behind the arc. Three minutes later, the GC lead was 46-39 halfway through the period.

GC was in full control for the rest of the game; Caleb Farrish helped pad its lead, scoring nine points over the last seven minutes, as Guilford won 67-55. In the month of January alone, the Quakers have won six out of seven games.

Caleb Farrish led the offensive effort with 16 points, going 7-12 from the field. Julius Burch was dominant in the stat sheet, with 14 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Tyler Dearman went perfect from the free-throw line (5-5) with 12 points overall, and Rob Littlejohn scored 11.

As a team, Guilford had their best shooting performance overall, at an impressive 52.2% clip (24-46). GC also was perfect from the foul line in this contest, their first time achieving this since early December against Roanoke (Dec. 6).

Guilford heads up to Virginia for the second straight weekend to begin a two-game away stretch, taking on Averett in Danville on Saturday, January 27. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
