Early 2nd-half run proves to be the difference as Monmouth clips Grinnell men

MONMOUTH, Ill. - A fast run to start the second half proved to be the difference as Monmouth College clipped Grinnell College's men's basketball team 104-91 in Midwest Conference play Wednesday.

The teams were tied 47-all at halftime before the Fighting Scots opened the second stanza with 13 unanswered points to go ahead 60-47.

It was still an eight-point game midway through the second half when Grinnell came alive, using a seven-point run to pull within one. Kai Te Huki '27 began things with a 3-pointer, Tolu Johnson '25 broke through for a layup on Te Huki's assist and John Vincent '26 recorded another layup on Gabe Garcia's '27 assist with 8:55 left to make it 72-71.

Grinnell never gained the lead, but came within one twice more as Te Huki's free throw closed the gap to 74-73 with 8:24 remaining and Jordan Lee's '27 layup made it 76-75 at the 8:11 mark. However, Monmouth followed Lee's basket with a 10-1 run and never looked back on its way to victory.

Te Huki, Garcia and Lee led Grinnell's scoring charge with 31, 15 and 12 points, respectively. Te Huki had nine 3-pointers among his totals.

Nick Lundy '27 and Zach Rosen '26 added career-highs of six rebounds each, while Rosen also had an all-time collegiate best of five steals. Nick Courtney '26 added three steals.

Johnson blocked a pair of shots, boosting his career total to 41. That ranks 13th in program history.

Grinnell is now 6-2 in the MWC and 12-4 in all games, while the hosts improved to 5-3 in the league and 11-6 overall.

The Pioneers are at home Saturday when Ripon College visits Darby Gymnasium for a MWC test. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
