Captains Hang on for 59-57 Victory at Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Christopher Newport University overcame a two-point halftime deficit Wednesday night, and held on for a 59-57 victory over the University of Mary Washington. The win was the third straight for the 25th-ranked Captains, and CNU improved to 15-4 with the hard-fought victory at Ron Rosner Arena on the UMW campus.

Fifth-year seniors Ian Anderson and Trey Barber both came off the bench to record double-doubles to lead the way for John Krikorian's squad. Anderson scored ten points and pulled down ten rebounds, while Barber scored 14 points and registered ten boards and also blocked three shots as the Captains won for the tenth straight time over the Eagles. Junior Collin Hines led CNU in scoring with 16 points and his brother, senior All-American Jahn Hines, tallied 15 points in the victory.

"Mary Washington has one of the best defenses in the country," Krikorian said following the win. "We knew coming in points would be hard to come by, and I give a lot of credit to Mary Washington for a great effort. Ian Anderson was a warrior tonight for us, as was Collin Hines, and their efforts really stood out. Against a very stingy defense, we did just enough to win the game."

The battle featured 51 fouls and 57 free throws, and was tied nine times with five lead changes. Both squads held leads of seven points, Mary Washington in the opening half (26-19) and CNU in the second half (59-52), the largest the teams were separated all night. UMW held a 33-31 halftime advantage, but did not lead after the Captains pulled even four minutes into the second half, 47-47.

Mary Washington, now 9-6, stayed close and later pulled to within one point, 50-49, on a three-pointer by Daniel Peterson with 5:41 to play. The Captains, though, re-gained momentum and answered with a 9-3 run to open up their seven-point advantage, 59-52. UMW would continue to not go away, again pulling to within two, 59-57, on another Peterson three-pointer with just 46 seconds to play. The score would prove to be the final of the night, as the Captains failed to put the game away by missing four free throws in the final minute. Mary Washington's last-ditch attempt at the basket, another Peterson three-point try, was well off the mark and the Captains held on to win.

Peterson led the way for the Eagles with 18 points, and senior Cameron McCravy added 14. Junior Trey Pittman also posted a double-double for UMW with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Jahn Hines moved into 15th place on CNU's all-time scoring list with his 15-point effort. He has now scored 1,332 career points in 82 games, and is now 20 points behind Ted Berry for 14th place on the list.

With its tenth straight win over the Eagles, CNU now holds a 38-7 lead in the all-time series. The teams will meet again at the Freeman Center on Saturday, February 10th.

Christopher Newport returns home to host Warren Wilson this Saturday. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. at the Freeman Center, and will follow the CNMU/Warren Wilson women's game, which tips off at 2:00 p.m.
