No. 1 Hampden-Sydney Earns Hard-Fought Road Win At Ferrum 60-52

FERRUM, Va. -- Senior Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) scored a game-high 20 points, adding 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season and 21st of his career, to lead nationally-ranked No. 1 Hampden-Sydney College to a 60-52 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) road win at Ferrum College on Wednesday night in Ferrum. Fifth-year Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) finished with 16 points, including 5-6 free throws over the final 2:38, as the visiting Tigers won their sixth-straight game and improved to 11-1 overall, 3-1 in the ODAC. The Panthers dropped to 12-2 overall, 3-2 in the ODAC, and were led by Bryant Wall with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

"Gritty road win," said fifth-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "We knew it was going to be a fight for 40 minutes. Those guys are really good, especially at their place. Our guys stayed the course and we made some big plays down the stretch. Shout-out to all the Hampden-Sydney supporters who showed up! We always love when we have them with us."

H-SC took an early 10-4 advantage at 16:07 after a slam dunk by Clements that followed four quick points by Hubbard, along with baskets from senior team captain Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) and senior Alex Elliott (Marietta, GA). The Tigers led 16-7 with 13:27 on the first-half clock following a jumper in the lane by freshman Blake Wilson (Charlottesville), into the contest off the bench. FC was within 18-13 at 10:44, but the Garnet & Grey used a 13-6 run to take a 31-19 advantage with 3:23 left in the half, getting three-point field goals from junior Ayman McGowan (Memphis, TN) (off the bench), Hubbard and senior team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC). The Panthers, however, closed strong with the final seven points of the half to make it a 31-26 contest at the intermission.

H-SC led 35-28 just 2:14 into the second half after baskets from Hardy and Brazil, but FC answered with seven-straight points to tie the contest at 35-35 with 14:11 remaining. Following a timeout, the Tigers responded with an offensive rebound basket by Hubbard and a three-pointer from Clements to lead 40-35 at 11:58, and the visitors extended their run to 14-4 to take a 49-39 advantage with just 5:40 left to play. Hubbard scored the last five points of the run, including another offensive rebound basket, while sophomore Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) added a score down low and Clements scored on a driving layup. The Panthers made a final push and were within 49-44 at 2:49, but the Garnet & Grey secured their hard-fought victory with 7-8 free throws over the final 2:38, including Clements' 5-6 along with 2-2 by Brazil, while Hubbard added another second-chance score on an offensive tip-in and Clements scored on a key drive to the basket with just over a minute on the clock.

Hardy had four points, along with season-highs of eight rebounds and a game-high four steals. Fifth-year Chase Turner (Virginia Beach) added two points, a career-high 10 rebounds and three steals. H-SC shot 36% (24-67) from the field, including just 18% (4-22) on three-pointers, and 73% (8-11) at the free throw line. The Tigers enjoyed a 32-24 advantage in points scored in the paint, and had a 20-12 advantage in second chance points, out-rebounding the home team 44-36 with 16 offensive rebounds—though scoring a season-low 60 points.

Wall led FC with his 13 points and game-high 12 rebounds. Alfredo Abel-Rivera added nine points for the Panthers. FC shot 34% (18-53) from the field, including just 19% (3-16) on three-pointers, and 77% (13-17) at the line. The Panthers entered the contest averaging 85.2 points per game, but were limited to a season-low 52 points.

H-SC is scheduled to return home to play ODAC opponent Washington and Lee University on Saturday afternoon, January 6 at 2 p.m. in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House.
