Callahan Guides WPI Past No. 7 Williams in Coghlin Tournament Semifinal

WORCESTER -- Behind a 26-point effort from Aidan Callahan (Rowley, MA), the WPI men's basketball team upended No. 7 Williams on Saturday afternoon, 77-62 in a Ted Coghlin Tournament semifinal to remain perfect in the 2023-24 season.

The Engineers (2-0), who are receiving votes in the D3hoops.com Preseason Men's Top 25 poll, spoiled Williams' (0-1) season opening game with the victory.

Callahan finished the game with 26 points on 7-of-13 shooting while also adding three rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals and was a perfect 11-for-11 from the charity stripe on the day. John Adams (Douglas, MA) added another 19 points to the total for WPI, one rebound shy of the double-double (9) and added five assists and a pair of steals on the day.

The Ephs were led by a 13 point effort from Nate Karren (Sacramento, CA), who was 3-for-6 from deep during the game while also adding five rebounds and a block. The duo of Brandon Roughley (Dalton, MA) and Cole Prowett-Smith (Fairfield, CT) each added 11 points while Roughley pulled down seven boards and Prowett-Smith added another four rebounds to the total.

The Engineers shot 50 percent from the field during the game (26-of-52) and connected on four treys while Williams shot 44.2 percent from the field (23-of-52) and hit six threes. WPI was 21-of-24 from the charity stripe during the game while Williams was 10-of-13.

WPI's Callahan started things off draining three-straight free throws after being fouled on an attempt from deep as the Engineers began the game on an 8-0 run, a lead that they would never give up. However, Williams was able to get within five, 14-9, after a Ben McGraw (Jacksonville, FL) three-pointer with 12:26 remaining.

The two teams went back-and-forth for the remainder of the first half, with the Engineers pulling away a little bit at a time using a quick 6-0 run around the five minute mark, thanks to a pair of Callahan buckets that made it a 28-16 game with five minutes to go. The two teams traded baskets back and forth but WPI finished the half on a 5-0 run behind an Adams and-one, and a pair of J.R. Newman (Havertown, PA) free throws to take a 42-27 lead into the half.

The Engineers kept Williams at bay in the second half as well, starting things off with another basket to extend the lead to 17, the largest of the game coming out of the locker rooms.

Another McGraw trey cut the WPI lead to 10, 50-40 with 12:15 remaining in the game but Justin Molen (Newark, DE) immediately answered with a layup, followed by a Jack Bleier (Victor, NY) 3-pointer to re-extend the Engineer lead to 15.

The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the game as Williams could not get close enough to threaten and the Engineers hit their free throws down the stretch to keep control of the game and ultimately the victory.

WPI is headed back to its sixth Ted Coghlin Tournament Championship game and looking for its fifth Tournament Championship title tomorrow, November 12 at 3pm against the winner of the Dickinson/Saint Joseph's (ME) game. Williams is back in the Tournament's consolation game Sunday afternoon at 1pm.
