WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson men's basketball team rolled to an 87-63 victory over visiting Grove City Saturday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Salvitti Gymnasium. Saturday's game marked the regular season finale for both squads. The two teams will rematch Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the PAC Tournament Quarterfinals in Washington.

Matt Seidl (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Hills) poured in a game-high 24 points for the Presidents as he broke the freshman scoring record. Seidl's 394 points helped him eclipse Mike Turkaly's previous single-season high of 383 points. Turkaly's record, which was set in 1972-73, had stood for 50 years before Seidl surpassed it Saturday. Seidl, the North Hills product, added six rebounds and three steals in the win Saturday.

W&J finishes the regular season at 19-6 overall and 16-4 in conference as they enter next week's tournament as the No. 1 seed. Grove City finishes the regular season slate at 10-15 overall and 8-12 in the conference. The Wolverines earned the No. 8 seed for the second-consecutive season.

The Presidents came of the gates strong as they quickly built up a double-digit lead within the first five minutes of play. W&J had a good spread of the offense as each player on the court made key contributions to the lead building including Kyran Mitchell (Reading, Pa. / Berks Catholic) and Nick Gearhart (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon) as they also found ways to disrupt the Wolverines offense.

The Presidents stretched their lead to as many as 27 points during the first half. The Presidents took a commanding 49-25 lead into halftime. The Wolverines were able to trim the W&J lead down to 17 late in the second half but the Presidents were able to earn the victory by a comfortable margin.

Aside from Seidl's strong offensive day, three other Presidents finished in double figures scoring. Brandon Jakiela (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) finished with 12 points off the bench while Gearhart and J.R. Mazza (Bridgeport, W.Va./University) tallied 11 points apiece.

W&J held advantages in fast break points (22-2), points off turnovers (27-16) and points in the paint (54-22) while Grove City led in second chance points (20-14). Grove City shot 26 of 77 (34 percent) from the field for the game while W&J converted 35 of 66 (53 percent) field goal attempts. Grove City committed 23 turnovers in the loss.

W&J honored Mitchell and classmate Dirk Daniels (Phillipsburg, N.J./Blair Academy) on Senior Day and recognized them for their contributions the past four years.

The Presidents will host the  PAC Tournament quarterfinals versus Grove City on Tuesday, Feb. 21. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Salvitti Gym. W&J (2022) and Grove City (2020) are the last two PAC Tournament champions to represent the league in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
