Cortland Men Clinch SUNYAC Third Seed with 67-60 Win at Geneseo

GENESEO, N.Y. – Austin Grunder (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) scored 30 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and handed out four assists as Cortland clinched the third seed in the upcoming SUNYAC men's basketball tournament with a 67-60 victory at Geneseo
 
Cortland (18-7, 13-5 SUNYAC) finished tied for third with Oneonta in the league standings, and all of the league tiebreakers were even between the teams. A coin flip was conducted by the league office and Cortland won the toss to earn the third seed. Cortland will get a rematch with sixth-seeded Geneseo (11-14, 8-10 SUNYAC) in Cortland on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m., while Oneonta will also host a first-round game Tuesday versus fifth-seeded New Paltz. The Cortland/Geneseo first-round winner will play second-seeded Brockport in the semifinals on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at top-seeded Oswego. 
 
Grunder recorded his fifth straight double-double and 17th of the season. He shot 10-of-22 from the field with three 3-pointers and he made 7-of-8 free throws. Kareem Lubin (Monroe/Washingtonville) scored 11 points with two 3-pointers and Riley McEvoy (Homer) made three 3-pointers and finished with nine points. Cam Williams (Rome/Rome Free Academy) chipped in with six points and seven rebounds and Aaron Coston (Kerhonkson/Rondout Valley) had three assists and five rebounds. 
 
Ethan St. Lucia posted a double-double for the Knights with 20 points and 10 rebounds. He made four 3-pointers. Sebastian Pacheco scored 11 points and brought down seven rebounds and Harrison Dignan led the hosts with eight assists. Cole Kattan made three treys and finished with nine points and eight rebounds. 
 
Cortland trailed 27-17 midway through the first half but quickly got back into the game on three consecutive McEvoy 3-pointers to close within 27-26 at the 7:35 mark. The rest of the half remained tight before Geneseo scored the last five points to take a 39-33 halftime lead. St. Lucia scored 16 of his 20 points in the opening half. 
 
Cortland scored the first seven points of the second half to take the lead, then used a 10-1 run between the 16:19 and 11:29 marks of the second half to take its largest lead of the game at 54-44. The Red Dragons led by 10 points on two other occasions. The Knights were back within five at 60-55 on a Kattan 3-pointer with 4:14 left, but Lubin converted a 3-point play with just over three minutes left to put Cortland up by seven. Geneseo once again got within five on Kattan's trey with 1:08 left, but Cortland sealed the win with two Grunder foul shots in the final 15 seconds.
