Hope falls to Trine in defensive struggle

The Hope College men's basketball team lost to No. 21-ranked Trine University, 56-43, on Wednesday at DeVos Fieldhouse.

The Flying Dutchmen allowed the fewest points they had all season but could not overcome scoring their fewest points of the season.

Hope (13-9, 7-4 MIAA) remained in third place in the MIAA standings — two games ahead of fourth-place Olivet College.

The Flying Dutchmen host Olivet on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 3 p.m. at DeVos Fieldhouse.

Against Trine, sophomore center Gabe Quillan (Ada, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS) topped Hope with 15 points.

Senior guard Clayton Dykhouse (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) chipped in 13 points.

The Flying Dutchmen shot 33.3 percent from the floor (16-48), including 12.5 percent from 3-point range (2-16), and 50 percent from the free-throw line (9-18). The 43 points is the fewest points Hope has ever scored at DeVos Fieldhouse.

Hope limited Trine (20-2, 10-1 MIAA) to 42.2% field-goal shooting (19-45) and 23.1% 3-point shooting (3-13).

Trine led, 25-21, at halftime then broke open the game during the second half with a 21-3 run.

Brent Cox's 19 points led the Thunder, who remained one game behind MIAA-leading Calvin University. Connor Jones added 14.
