Defense Earns Men’s Basketball Fourth Straight Conference Win Over York

York, Pa. – The Stevenson men's basketball team held the York Spartans to 45 points in a defensive battle, winning 53-45, over the MAC opponent. 
 
First Half
After a couple misses from both teams, SU graduate student guard McKale Williams hit a step back jumper to open the game. Five minutes in, a steal from Williams sent sophomore forward Nate Arrington the other way to set up graduate student guard Connor Walsh for a three-pointer, giving the Mustangs a 9-2 lead. York continued to have trouble finding the basket, but after a full line change, they began to trade threes with the Mustangs. Later with 6:14 remaining, York's Tate Landis hit another three to bring the Spartans within one point. Both squads went scoreless for nearly five minutes before a Walsh free throw fell, and York's Chris Miers' dunk tied the game. Junior guard Ethan Jonesgave Stevenson the lead as he sank two free throws before the teams went to locker room

Second Half
York tied the game a minute into the half before a Walsh jumper helped the Mustangs take back the lead followed by a sophomore forward Cameron Smith layup. Both sides traded free throws, and with 12 minutes remaining, Williams made a layup and a three to give the Mustangs a seven-point lead. He then made three straight free throws to increase the lead before a a Mustang timeout at 3:33. York's Miers hit a long three as the Mustangs missed two shots and were unable to close out the game. With a minute to go, the Spartans brought the game within five, but Smith sealed the win for the Mustangs with a pair of free throws, 53-45.

Following the conference win, the Mustangs improve to 10-5 (4-2 MACC) and have now won four straight MAC Commonwealth contests. They will remain on the road, traveling to Eastern on Saturday, Jan. 14 to take on the Eagles at 3 p.m. The York Spartans fall to 7-8 (1-5 in the MACC), and will next host Widener University on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 3 p.m.
