ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball team outscored Houghton University in both halves as part of a 85-63 victory on Wednesday evening from the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.

The Saxons (6-3, 2-1 Empire 8) shot 48.4 percent from the field, while winning the rebound battle over the Highlanders (2-5, 1-1 Empire 8) by a 44-31 margin.

Alfred University was led by Brewster Marshall (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads), who finished the game with 20 points and nine rebounds. Mike Schmidt (Olean, NY/Olean) ended with 16 points to go with five assists. Casey Curran (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) added 16 points and seven boards for AU.

"We shot the ball well tonight because we have a really unselfish group," Head Coach Erich Kaempffe said. "Our guys made the right passes and I think it's obvious how much our players care about each other."

The Highlanders were the ones to set the tone in the early stages of the first half, opening the game with a 14-4 run to force the Saxons to play from behind. Alfred University landed six shots from beyond the arc as part of a 20-2 run to climb back from their deficit and take an eight-point lead. Adam Enders (Belfast, NY/Belfast) hit two additional shots from deep before AU entered halftime with a 39-27 advantage. Three-point shots from Curran and Enders opened scoring for the Saxons in the second half. Both Curran and Schmidt finished the final half with double-digit points before Alfred University called upon their depth to close out the game and seal the victory.

"We're happy to win a few games, but we still have a long way to go," Kaempffe said. "We're excited to get back to work for a really well-coached and talented Hilbert team."

Alfred University will next host Hilbert College on Saturday with tip-off scheduled for 2:00 PM.
