Cortland Men Ride Quick Start to Defeat Fredonia, 87-62

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland scored the game's first 14 points and led by double figures the remainder of the contest as the Red Dragons defeated visiting Fredonia, 87-62, in a SUNYAC men's basketball game. Cortland improved to 11-2 overall and leads the SUNYAC with a 6-0 mark.
 
Aaron Coston (Kerhonkson/Rondout Valley) and Austin Grunder (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) each scored 25 points to lead Cortland. Coston made 10-of-15 shots from the field and in addition to his career-high point total he also posted a career-best nine rebounds. Grunder was 8-for-16 from the field with two 3-pointers, grabbed five rebounds, blocked three shots and dished out a season-high seven assists. He moved into third place on Cortland's career scoring list with 1,390 points, trailing only Jesse Winter (1,525 points from 2009-13) and Jason Thomas (1,419 points from 1992-95).
 
Isaiah Preston (Penfield) matched his career best with six assists and pulled down four rebounds. Kareem Lubin (Monroe/Washingtonville) scored nine points, Isaiah Austin (Albany) netted six points and Teemu Tumanoff (Vantaa, Finland/Miller School of Albemarle) finished with five points and three rebounds, all in the first half.
 
AJ Knight led Fredonia (0-13, 0-7 SUNYAC) with 17 points and Aaron Collins scored 13 points.
 
Cortland led 14-0 at the 15:25 mark of the first half, 27-7 with 11:58 left and 32-9 after a Coston dunk with 9:49 remaining. The Red Dragons' largest lead of the half was 44-15 after two Grunder free throws with 4:58 left before halftime. Fredonia closed its deficit to 20 points at halftime, 47-27, and got as close as 55-39 on two Knight foul shots with 15:27 left in the game. Cortland, however, scored 15 of the game's next 17 points, including eight by Coston, to match its largest lead at 70-41 with 10:45 left.
 
Cortland shot 48 percent from the field, including 54 percent in the first half. Fredonia's 38 percent field goal accuracy included 50 percent in the second half.
 
Cortland hosts Buffalo State in a conference game Saturday at 4 p.m.
