Dickman reaches 100 wins as Hood rolls past Waynesburg

FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College men's basketball head coach Chad Dickman picked up his 100th win in style as the Blazers defeated Waynesburg 109-51 in non-conference play at the Ronald J. Volpe Athletic Center. 

Inside the Box Score

  • 14 different Blazers scored in the game. 
  • Trumaine Strickland (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) scored 16 points in just 15 minutes. 
  • Ian Pugh (Woodstock, Va./Virginia Academy) came off the bench for career highs in almost every statistical category. He scored 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting with a pair of 3-point field goals and grabbed six rebounds to go along with three assists and two steals. 
  • Michael Wallace (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum School) had 10 points and five boards, while Ryan Hollwedel (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) matched his point total. 
  • The Blazers hit 20 3-pointers in the contest, one shy of the school record. 
  • Hood's 109 points are a season high, as were the Blazers' 50 rebounds. 
  • As a team, Hood shot .542 from 3-point range, the best mark for the Blazers since January 2019. 
  • One game after the bench scored 62 points, the reserves combined for 65. 

How it Happened

  • Hood led 8-4 with 18 minutes left in the first half before scoring 15 unanswered points in the next three minutes to take control of the game. The Blazers went to the bench early as Jevon Yarbrough (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) scored six points in the run, including a 3-pointer to make it 23-4 at the 14:03 mark. 
  • A 22-5 run over the final six minutes of the half turned a 17-point lead into a 58-24 advantage at the half. 
  • After shooting 62 percent overall and from 3-point distance in the first half, Hood kept its momentum going once play resumed. Six Blazers scored during a 21-5 run over the opening eight minutes of the second half as Hood's lead climbed to 79-29. 
  • The lead swelled to as many as 63 on a pair of free throws by Pugh with less than six minutes to play. 

Analysis

  • Hood's defense swarmed the Yellow Jackets, limiting Waynesburg to just 23 percent shooting and 17 turnovers. It is the second time this season that the Blazers held an opponent under 30 percent and the best mark under Chad Dickman
  • Hood was plus-18 on the backboards, outrebounding Waynesburg 50-32. 

For the Opponent

  • Matt Popeck was the high scorer for the Yellow Jackets with nine points. 
  • Jansen Knotts had a game-high seven rebounds and Bryson Wilt finished with three blocks. 

Notes

  • Hood improved to 7-5 on the year, while Waynesburg slipped to 3-7.
