Strong Second Half Lifts #3 R-MC Men’s Hoops Over LBC

ASHLAND, Va. – Freshman Jabril Robinson (Derwood, Md./South Kent Prep) posted career highs with 15 points, eight assists and three steals as the third-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team rallied for an 82-60 victory over Lancaster Bible in the first round of the R-MC Coaches Tournament on Thursday evening.

How it Happened:

  • The Chargers hit a pair of free throws to start the scoring before junior Will Coble (Charlotte, N.C./Davidson Day) buried a three-pointer to put the Yellow Jackets on top 3-2. Freshman Kyle Keener (Canton, Ga./Sequoyah) nailed a trey to give R-MC an 16-10 advantage. After two foul shots by LBC, junior Lance Johnson (South Riding, Va./Freedom) had a follow to push the lead back to six at 18-12 with 12 minutes left in the first half. The Chargers would use a 19-4 spurt to take a 31-22 lead with 3:45 remaining. Senior Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) had six points and Robinson added four as the Yellow Jackets closed the half on a 10-4 run to trail 35-32 at intermission. Talbert had 12 points in the first period, going 6 for 7 from the floor.
  • Following an LBC turnover to start the second half, Robinson hit a triple to tie the game at 35-35. The Chargers were up 38-37, their final lead of the contest, before a four-point play by Keener capped an 18-3 spurt as the Yellow Jackets led 55-41 with 12 minutes left in the contest. LBC closed to within eight at 60-52 before R-MC ended the game with a 22-8 run over the final eight minutes to record the 82-60 win.

By The Numbers:

  • R-MC had four players score in double figures for the second straight game. Talbert led all scorers with 16, followed by Robinson with 15, Keener with a season-best 14 and senior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) with 13.
  • The Yellow Jackets had a 41-37 edge on the boards. Junior Daniel Mbangue (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) had nine and Mallory pulled down seven.
  • R-MC had 22 assists on their 31 field goals. Robinson had eight, Mbangue dished out five and Mallory added three.
  • Robinson and Mallory both registered three steals.
  • Mallory had four blocked shots. He has 218 career blocks, a program record and the third-highest total in the history of the ODAC.
  • R-MC scored 50 points in the second half, its second-highest half of scoring this season. The Yellow Jackets tallied 51 in the second half of a 91-74 home win over Randolph.

For the Record:

  • R-MC extended its home win streak to 54 games, a program record and the longest current streak in Division III.
