BW Men’s Basketball Falls to Pioneers

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball fell to Marietta College in the first game of an Ohio Athletic Conference men's and women's doubleheader inside the Ban Johnson Arena by a final score of 78-73.

BW Leaders (3-4, 1-2 OAC)

  • Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard Jake Snyder (Stow/Archbishop Hoban) tied his season high with 21 points. He also led both teams with four assists.
  • Sophomore guard Ashton Price (Bay Village/Bay) added 19 points.
  • Freshman guard Ray Ellington (Westlake) set a career-high with eight points.
  • Sophomore forward Zoltan Nagy (Lakewood/St. Edward) set a career-high in rebounds with seven boards.

Marietta Leaders (6-2, 3-0 OAC)

  • David Sanford led with 21 points.
  • Lovenson Xavier added 18 points and four rebounds.
  • Sahmi Willoughby scored nine points and led the game with 14 rebounds.

First Half (36-29 Marietta)

  • Marietta opened the game hot as they leaped out to a 12-0 run.
  • BW was able to regain ground with a 7-2 run of their own.
  • The Pioneers followed that up with a 7-0 run to expand their lead to 21-7 with 12:26 left in the half.
  • After back and forth action, the Yellow Jackets went on a 9-2 run to trim the Marietta lead to 31-27.
  • The defenses shined at the end of the half as BW ended the half going 1-7 from the field and the Pioneers finished the half 1-6 from the field.
  • Ellington was the high scorer for the Yellow Jackets as he scored eight points on 3-5 shooting.
  • Snyder added six points and led both teams with two assists.
  • Xavier led both squads with 12 points and he added three boards.
  • Sanford added 10 points on 4-5 shooting in the half. 

Second Half (78-73 Marietta)

  • The start of the half featured back and forth action until a 6-0 run gave BW their first lead of the game with 14:01 left in the game after junior forward Rob Watson III (Sagamore Hills/Nordonia) made two free throws.
  • Marietta followed up the Yellow Jackets run with their own 6-2 run to regain a 5 point lead with 11:06 left.
  • A 12-4 BW run beginning with 5:51 left in the game gave them 71-69 lead.
  • A quick 4-0 run by the Pioneers gave them a 73-71 lead until Snyder hit a layup to tie things up at 73-73.
  • Marietta was able to go on a 5-0 run the rest of the way as the teams walked off the court with a 78-73 Pioneers victory.
  • Snyder led the second half scoring with 15 points.
  • Price added 14 points, two rebounds and two assists.
  • Sanford added a team high tying 11 points in the second half for the Pioneers.
  • Jac Alexander was also tied for the team led in second half points with 11.

The Yellow Jackets return to the hardwood on Wednesday, December 14 when they host a non-conference game against Hobart (N.Y.) College in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center with tipoff at 3:00 p.m.
