Strong shooting, rebounding lifts Salisbury over Penn State Abington, 86-71

ABINGTON, Pa. – The Salisbury University men's basketball team used an explosive second half to cruise past the Penn State Abington Lions, 86-71, on Tuesday night in Abington, Pa.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Penn State Abington jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead before Kaiden Mines knocked down a three-pointer to put Salisbury on the board.
  • Mines' triple sparked a 9-0 run for the Sea Gulls to go up 9-4 with 13:48 left in the first half.
  • Andrew Silver capped off a 7-0 run for Salisbury with a deep three at 9:13 mark to extend the lead to 21-12.
  • Both teams went back-and-forth with shots and possession for the next few minutes, and with 3:18 on the clock, Brandon Craig knocked down a pair of free throws to give Salisbury its largest lead of the half, 30-19.
  • The Lions cut into the Sea Gull lead after they closed out the half on a 7-2 run to send the teams into halftime with a score of 34-30.
  • Abington came out hot to start the second half. Just three minutes into the second half, Brian Randolph knotted the game with a three-pointer. On the Lions' next possession, Randolph broke the tie, 39-37, with a jumper.
  • Down 49-48 with 14:10 on the clock, Salisbury went on a 10-0 to reclaim its lead, including eight straight points from Greg Bloodsworth to cap the run.
  • At the 8:36 mark, Randolph knocked down another trey to bring the Lions within three, 60-57.
  • On the ensuing possession for the Sea Gulls, Mines converted a four-point play to extend the lead once more, 64-57.
  • Salisbury maintained its lead in the closing stages of the game. After a made layup from Craig, Salisbury had its largest lead of the day, 80-65, with two minutes to play.
  • Both teams added a few more baskets in the waning moments of the match and it finished with a final score of 86-71.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Salisbury shot a season-best 54.7 percent (29-for-53) from the floor, including a blistering 84.6 percent (11-for-13) from three-point range.
  • Greg Bloodsworth scored a game-high 29 points on 8-for-13 shooting, including a perfect 4-for-4 from deep and 9-for-9 at the charity stripe. It is his fourth 20-plus point performance of the season. Bloodsworth also grabbed six rebounds, dished out four assists and stole the ball four times.
  • Brandon Craig recorded his fifth 20-plus point effort on the season with 20 points in the victory. Craig was 8-for-15 shooting and reeled in six boards.
  • Kaiden Mines scored career-high 13 points off the bench and went 4-for-4 from beyond the arc.
  • Salisbury dominated the glass and outrebounded Abington, 34-19.
  • The Sea Gulls also went a perfect 17-for-17 at the free-throw line.

PENN STATE ABINGTON NOTES

  • Brian Randolph led the Lions with a team-high 22 points and five rebounds.
  • Alex Salata scored 18 points and dished out a game-high seven assists.
  • Alex Podolski chipped in 12 points.
