Cortland Men Hold Off Host Fredonia, 70-64

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Aaron Coston (Kerhonkson/Rondout Valley) scored 16 points and Austin Grunder (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) and Kareem Lubin (Monroe/Washingtonville) tallied 14 points each as Cortland held off host Fredonia, 70-64, in SUNYAC men's basketball action.

Cortland improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in league play with the victory. The Red Dragons travel to Brockport Saturday at 5 p.m. for a conference matchup. 
 
Coston entered the game with just seven points scored over Cortland's first four games. He finished 6-of-9 from the floor, including one 3-pointer, made 3-of-5 free throws and grabbed four rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench. He scored nine points in the first seven minutes of the second half to help the Red Dragons establish a 48-42 lead, and Cortland never trailed after that despite the game remaining close throughout. 
 
Grunder notched a double-double with 14 points and 17 rebounds, 13 on the defensive glass, and he added three assists. Lubin was 5-of-9 from the floor and added three rebounds and a team-high five assists to his 14-point effort. Humberto Cabrera (Millbrook) and Cam Williams (Rome/Rome Free Academy) scored nine points each, with Cabrera also totaling three assists and Williams with three blocks and five rebounds. 
 
AJ Knight led Fredonia (0-8, 0-2 SUNYAC) with 20 points and three steals and also grabbed five rebounds. Aaron Collins finished with 17 points and six assists and Jacob Hougan scored 10 points and led the Blue Devils with six rebounds and two blocks. 
 
Neither team led by more than four points in the first half, and Cortland took a 33-30 lead into the locker room at halftime on a Cabrera 3-pointer at the buzzer. Fredonia took a 35-33 lead in the first minute of the second half on five straight points from Collins, but Cortland rattled off eight consecutive points on a Lubin bucket, a Coston 3-pointer and a Coston 3-point play to go up 41-35. 
 
Fredonia answered with a 7-0 run, including four points from Marquis Tubman and a Knight 3-pointer, to take a 42-41 lead, but Cortland came back with baskets from Lubin and Grunder and another Coston 3-point play to take the lead for good. The hosts were still within two at 59-57 with less than five minutes left before Lubin hit a shot, Cabrera made a free throw and Danny Linehan (Blauvelt/Tappan Zee) made a 3-pointer to give the Red Dragons their largest lead of the night at 65-57 with less than four minutes remaining. Fredonia got no closer than four the rest of the way.
