Mallory Scores 15 for #1 R-MC Men’s Hoops at UMW

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Senior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) had 15 points and seven rebounds as the top-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team dropped a 58-52 decision at Mary Washington on Wednesday evening.

How it Happened:

  • Mallory hit a baseline jumper and junior Will Coble (Charlotte, N.C./Davidson Day) nailed a three-pointer as the Yellow Jackets took a 5-0 lead with 17:35 left in the first period. The Eagles would score eight straight points before a jumper and two free throws by Mallory gave R-MC a 9-8 edge with 12:22 remaining. UMW used a 10-2 spurt to go up 18-11 before a one-hander in the lane by junior Daniel Mbangue (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) stopped the run, making it 18-13 with 6:50 left. The Eagles would push the lead to 10 before two free throws by Mbangue make it 23-15 with 4:24 remaining. UMW would take a 31-19 lead at the break. Mallory had eight points and six rebounds in the first half.
  • The Eagles started the half with a 4-1 run before consecutive three-pointers by Mallory and freshman Keishawn Pulley Jr. (Louisa, Va./St. Christopher's) made it 35-26 with 15:25 left in the second period. UMW led 49-32 before a triple by Coble was followed by a trey and a layup by Pulley to cut the deficit to 49-40 with six minutes remaining. A free throw by freshman Bryce Scott (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day), a jumper by Mallory and a one-hander by Coble extended the run to 13-0 and made it 49-45 with 2:55 left. The Eagles pushed the lead back to seven before three free throws by Coble made it 56-52 with 34.6 seconds remaining. UMW hit two of four foul shots to make the final 58-52.

  • Mallory finished with 15 points, Pulley added 14 and Coble chipped in 13 for the Yellow Jackets.
  • R-MC had a 33-27 advantage on the glass. Mallory had seven rebounds and senior Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) grabbed six.
  • Talbert had four assists for the Yellow Jackets.

For the Record:

  • R-MC had its program record 29-game win streak snapped.
