Brewers Dismantle Raptors

More news about: Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Behind a triple-double from junior Zach Johnson (San Francisco, CA), the Vassar men's basketball team recorded its second-highest of the season scoring total defeating Bard 90-69 on Friday evening in the AFC. In addition, six Brewers scored in double figures. Vassar moves to 14-5 overall and 10-3 in the Liberty League, while Bard falls to 5-14 and 2-10 in conference play.

Bard scored first behind a three-pointer from Tyler Bruns to take a 3-0 lead, but that proved to be the only time they held the advantage during the night. After Johnson collected a defensive rebound, he made a quick outlook pass to Jack Rothenberg (Yardley, PA) to convert a fastbreak layup. That began a 6-0 Brewers run that was capped off with an Avni Mustafaj (Yonkers, NY) inside jumper. Bruns scored again to keep it a one-point game, but Ethan Ellis (Silver Spring, MD) drained a triple to put Vassar up 9-5 at 16:31.

The Raptors remained close and cut the Vassar lead to 15-14 when Ayo Akin-Bankole tipped in a shot at 11:13. An 8-0 run gave Vassar a double-digit lead at 27-17. Bard was able to bring the game within nine after Kevin Le hit a pair of free throws, and then Zev Katz (Philadelphia, PA) made it 41-30 following a layup with 15 seconds left. Bard's Greg Farrow sank two free throws before the half to cut the Vassar lead to 41-32.

Ellis sank a three to start the second half. Harris hit an inside jumper to cut it to 44-34, but that began a 9-0 run that included eight straight points from Mustafaj. A three-pointer from Statmatis Koulouris broke the streak, but Ellis scored a triple making it 56-37.

Vassar kept building its lead afterward, going up by 34 points when Alan Cedeno (Cape Coral, FL) converted a pair of free throws. The Brewers ran its reserve player for the remainder of the game. Some highlight plays followed, including an impressive bounce pass from Willem Nielsen (Brooklyn, NY) to Devyn Benson (Wilmington, DE) for the inside layup.

Ellis and Mustafaj scored 14 points to lead the Brewers, while Logan Scott (Schenectady, NY) and Cedeno recorded a career-high with 13 points. Luke Adams netted a career-best 12 points, while Johnson tacked on a triple-double with ten points, ten rebounds, and ten assists.

Kouloris scored ten points for the Raptors and grabbed five rebounds, while Le added eight points.

The Brewers return tomorrow to host RPI at 4 p.m.
