Rensselaer's Defense Lifts Engineers Past Dutchmen

TROY, N.Y. - Junior Jonny Angbazo had game-highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team outscored Union College 18-0 over an 11 minute stretch in defeating the Dutchmen 63-46 in a Liberty League contest at East Campus Arena. The Engineers improve to 14-2 overall and 8-1 in the conference, while Union drops to 7-8 and 4-5.

Trailing 18-13 with just over eight minutes remaining in the first half, RPI scored the final 14 points of the frame for a 27-18 lead at halftime. It then had the first four points of the second half before the visitors broke the string around the 17-minute mark. Five different players scored for the Engineers, who took a 19-18 lead with just under five minutes to play in the first. Angbazo, a forward, had eight of the 18 points in the string with sophomore Avery Eugster registering four and Mason Memmelaar, Dom Black and Brian Kelly each scoring two. 

RPI's lead remained double digits from that point on, growing to as many as 26 points on two occasions. It held the Dutchmen to 21.9% (7 of 32) shooting in the first half and 27% (17 of 63) for the game. On the other end, the Engineers hit on 44.0% of its shots (11 of 25) in the second half and 39.2% (20 of 51) overall. They had 11 steals with Black collecting three of them.

Angbazo was 8 of 13 from the floor and each of his 11 rebounds came on the defensive end. He also had two assists, two steals and two blocked shots in 33 minutes of action. Black finished with 13 points with four rebounds to go with his three swipes, while Eugster had 10 points, including a pair of three-pointers.

Union was paced by senior Mike Manley's 17 points, including five three-pointers. Temi George, another senior, added seven points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday afternoon at 4pm with Rensselaer hosting Ithaca College and Union visiting Skidmore College.
