Veras Scores His 1,000th Career Point as Centenary Beats Cabrini

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Senior Billy Veras scored his 1,000th career point and was one of four players to score in double figures as the Centenary University men's basketball team battled for an 80-60 win over Cabrini University in Atlantic East play on Wednesday night. The Cyclones snapped a four-game losing streak with the win.

Veras is the ninth player in school history and first since teammate Chris LaBelle to reach the 1,000-point plateau.

Cabrini jumped out to a 10-5 lead on a pair of jumpers from Aquil Stewart, the second coming at 14:58.

The two teams traded points as the Cavaliers took an 15-9 advantage on Donoven Mack's three-pointer at the 11:49 mark.

Five straight points from Veras pulled the Cyclones to within one, 15-14 with 9:51 to go until the half.

Cabrini led 21-19 with 4:21 showing on the clock.

A jumper from Veras kick started an 18-3 run that turned a two-point deficit into a 13-point advantage, 37-24 at the half. Graduate student Chris LaBelle scored five points in that stretch while Veras had four, including the 1,000th of his career at the 2:19 mark.

A 9-3 run to start the second half extended the Centenary advantage to 46-27 with 15:39 to go in the game. Sophomore Isaac Poueriet scored four points during that stretch.

A three-pointer from sophomore Trevor Giordano gave the Cyclones a 52-34 lead with 12:25 showing on the clock.

The two teams continued to battle as LaBelle's triple at 9:26 put the home squad ahead 59-38.

The Cyclones and Cavaliers traded points as a pair of free throws from junior D'Angelo Blackmond extended the lead to 68-44 with 5:50 to go in the game.

Centenary shot 46% from the field and was 17-for-23 from the foul line. Cabrini shot 40.3% from the floor but was just 8-for-17 from the foul line. The Cyclones held a 47-35 lead in the rebounding battle.

LaBelle scored a game-high 25 points to go along with nine rebounds, four assists and two steals. Poueriet added 15 points and seven rebounds while Veras had 14 points and nine boards. Blackmond added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Mack had 10 points and three rebounds to lead Cabrini.

The Cyclones are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 29 when they host Gwynedd Mercy at 3 p.m.
