Cortland Men Lose 72-64 Battle vs. #25 Oswego

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Five Oswego players scored in double figures as the nationally 25th-ranked Lakers held off host Cortland, 72-64, in SUNYAC men's basketball action.
 
Oswego (15-1, 9-0 SUNYAC) won its 12th straight game. Cortland dropped to 7-8 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
 
Austin Grunder (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) led Cortland with 26 points and 14 rebounds, and he also recorded three assists. He shot 9-for-19 from the floor with two 3-pointers and he made 6-of-7 free throws. Humberto Cabrera (Millbrook) added 11 points, Kareem Lubin (South Blooming Grove/Washingtonville) finished with nine points and nine rebounds, and AJ Lawton (Saratoga Springs) scored nine points on three 3-pointers. Danny Linehan (Blauvelt/Tappan Zee) led the Red Dragons with four assists and he also grabbed five rebounds.
 
Brendan Mulson led Oswego's balanced scoring attack with 14 points, followed by Jeremiah Sparks with 13 and Devin Green with 12. Ahkee Anderson and Christian Simmons tallied 11 points apiece. Simmons led the Lakers with 11 rebounds, Sparks grabbed eight caroms, and Anderson and Julien Crittendon each handed out four assists. Anderson also ended with seven rebounds.
 
The teams shot almost identically from the floor. Cortland was 23-of-64 overall (36 percent), including 7-of-29 from 3-point range. Oswego was 21-of-64 from the field (33 percent) and also went 7-for-29 from deep. The difference for the Lakers came at the foul line - Oswego finished 23-of-30 from the charity stripe while Cortland was 11-of-17. Oswego also turned 16 offensive rebounds in a 23-7 advantage in second-chance points.
 
Oswego's largest lead was 10 points on three occasions in the first half. Cortland whittled its deficit to two at 23-21 on two Lubin free throws with 5:06 left in the half, and the Red Dragons trailed by five, 34-29, at halftime.
 
Down 42-36, Cortland scored eight straight points, all by Grunder, to take a 44-42 lead with 14:59 left in the game. With the Red Dragons ahead 46-44, Oswego tied the game on two free throws after a technical foul, then scored on its ensuing possession to take the lead for good at 48-46 with 13:30 left.
 
Cortland, however, stayed within striking distance the rest of the way. The Red Dragons were down 59-55 after a Grunder layup at the 6:51 mark and were still within five points in the final minute before the Lakers put the game away with four Green free throws.
 
Cortland hosts New Paltz on Friday, Jan. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in a SUNYAC matchup.
