Hampden-Sydney Earns ODAC Road Win At Bridgewater 70-50

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Fifth-year Jake Hahn (Ruckersville) and sophomore Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) each scored 15 points to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 70-50 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball victory on the road at Bridgewater College on Saturday afternoon in Bridgewater. Junior Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) added 10 points for the visiting Tigers, who led 38-27 at halftime, while improving to 9-3 overall, 4-1 in the ODAC. Aaron Oates scored a game-high 16 points for the host Eagles, who dropped to 4-8 overall, 0-4 in the ODAC.

"Always good to come away with a road win in the league," said third-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "I thought we really fought hard on the defensive end all night and had several great possessions. We are going to build on that defensive mentality going into next week."

H-SC fell behind 5-2 early before scoring six unanswered points to lead 8-5 at 14:45 following a pair of free throws by sophomore Alex Elliott (Marietta, GA). It was tied at 10-10, but the Tigers used a quick 10-6 run to go ahead 20-16 with 9:37 left in the half after a three-point field goal from Clements, and it was a 24-20 advantage at 7:37 following a three-pointer by sophomore Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC). The visitors closed the opening half strong, outscoring BC 14-7 over the final 6:01 to lead 38-27 at the intermission—Clements starting the late surge with another three-pointer and adding a steal and fast break slam dunk, as well, while freshman Nick Shryock (Davidson, NC) added five points, including a three-pointer.

H-SC continued its momentum to begin the second half, scoring the first six points to extend the margin to 44-27 with 15:46 remaining—getting four quick points from Hubbard and a basket by Shryock. The Tigers pushed the advantage to 49-28 at 13:07 following a three-pointer from Hahn and a reverse layup by Hubbard off a nice assist from Hahn. The Garnet & Grey led 55-31 at 10:36 after another basket inside by Hubbard, and took their largest lead of the day at 61-35 with 7:04 left to play when Hahn scored on an offensive rebound basket. Coach Kimbrough was able to play everyone available to him over the final five-plus minutes of the contest as the Tigers cruised to the comfortable road triumph.

Hahn and Hubbard led H-SC with their respective 15 points each, with Hahn adding game-highs of nine rebounds and three assists, and Hubbard grabbing five rebounds. Clements added 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Tigers. Elliott and Shryock each contributed seven points and five rebounds. H-SC shot 47% (27-58) from the field, including 26% (5-19) on three-pointers, and 73% (11-15) at the free throw line. The Tigers took a 50-34 advantage in rebounds, and outscored the hosts 42-16 in points in the paint.

Oates led BC with his game-high 16 points, adding eight rebounds and a game-high seven steals. Rashod Smith had 15 points, three assists and three steals for the Eagles. BC shot 22% (14-63) from the field, including 20% (6-30) on three-pointers, and 76% (16-21) at the line.

H-SC will play again at home on Wednesday night, January 19, at 7 p.m. against ODAC member Virginia Wesleyan University in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House.
