Undermanned Bengals drop ‘22 opener to Rochester

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Rochester shot 69.4 percent from the field in the second half, pulling away from the Buffalo State men's basketball team as the Bengals, playing just eight players, dropped their 2022 opener by a 99-57 score Wednesday evening.

  • Sheldon Adams (Rochester, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) led all scorers with 26 points, adding four assists and three rebounds in 38 minutes of action.
  • Robert Richards (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) added 10 points and three rebounds.
  • The Bengals shot 36.7 percent (22-of-60) from the field in the contest.


HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The teams traded threes in the first couple of minutes, and a Jeremiah Miller (Clinton, Md./Grace Brethren Christian) 3-point play sparked a 7-2 run, giving the Bengals an 18-16 lead.
  • With Rochester leading 27-23 at the 6:34 mark of the first half, the Yellowjackets went on a 10-0 run in 4:44, as they took a 13-point lead in the final two minutes.
  • A pair of C.J. Amsellem free throws with two seconds remaining gave Rochester a 39-28 lead at the half.
  • The Bengals kept pace with the Yellowjackets early in the second half as Rochester maintained a 52-38 lead after the first five minutes.
  • The Yellowjackets broke things open with runs of 12-2 and 24-4, as they held a commanding 92-53 lead at the two-minute mark. 

FOR THE FOES

  • Brian Amabilino Perez led the Yellowjackets with 25 points on 12-of-15 shooting from the field, adding seven rebounds and five assists.
  • Dan Masino added 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
  • Mitchell Kershner added 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field.
  • The Yellowjackets shot 54.8 percent from the field and their bench outscored the Bengals by a 35-7 margin.
  • The Yellowjackets out-rebounded the Bengals by a 52-23 margin, and scored 19 second-chance points.
