Johnson Leads FDU-Florham Men's Basketball to 100-96 Win at Hunter

New York, NY (November 17) – A career-high 28 points on a 12-for-17 shooting performance from the floor by sophomore Matthew Johnson (Oak Ridge, NJ) guided the FDU-Florham men's basketball team to a 100-96 win at Hunter College in non-conference action tonight.

The win pushed FDU's record to 2-2 on the season, while Hunter fell to 1-3 in 2021.
 
In addition to Johnson's 28 points, three other Devils hit double digit point totals in tonight's victory. Graduate student Oliver Ortman (North Caldwell, NJ) posted 20 points, on 7-of-8 shooting, to go along with eight rebounds, Shawn Summers Jr. (Montclair, NJ) hit six shots from the floor and seven from the line for 19 points, while Gerard Nicholson (Staten Island, NY) shot 80-percent with 13 points on the night.

As a team, FDU shot 37-for-55 (67.3-percent) from the floor, 6-for-14 (42.9-percent) from behind the arc and 20-for-28 (71.4-percent) from the free throw line. The Devils also registered 60 of its 100 points from inside the paint and took advantage of Hunter with 25 points off its 25 turnovers.
 
Over the first seven minutes of the game, Hunter built its largest lead of the first half at five points (18-13) following a layup by Jeremy Montrose. FDU answered, chipped away and took the lead for good at 24-23 just two minutes later. A layup with 9:16 to play in the first half capped a 17-7 scoring run for the Devils as they posted a five point edge at 30-25. Free throws down the stretch pushed FDU's lead to eight, its largest of the half, at 46-38, but a good three by Hunter's Ryan Lau made the score 46-41 as the buzzer sounded.
 
The Devils couldn't miss in the second half as they hit 20 of their 26 shots over the final 20 minutes of action. FDU shot at a 77.3-percent clip from the floor, went 3-for-4 from deep and converted 17 of 23 times from the free throw line. Both teams combined for 109 points in the second stanza.
 
FDU posted a 15-3 run to open the second half as the Devils took their largest lead of the game at 17 points (61-44) following a good free throw by Summers. The spurt featured five points from Summers, four from Jamal Santana (Randolph, NJ) and two from Nichols, Ortman and Johnson.

Hunter climbed all the way back and knotted the score at 70-70 with 8:27 to play following a dunk by Luka Jakic but was never able to regain the lead. Up by two with under a minute of play, FDU hit four of five free throws down the stretch to win 100-96 in a road thriller tonight.
 
Hunter statistically held a 42-32 edge in rebounds and a 15-8 advantage in steals.
 
FDU (2-2) will play its first home game of the 2021-22 campaign on Saturday, November 20 at 5:00 pm against Rutgers-Newark University.
 
Note: The men's basketball game vs. Rutgers-Newark was moved from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm due to the FDU football team hosting an ECAC Bowl Game at 12:00 pm on Saturday afternoon.
