Balanced Attack Leads Centenary to 104-84 Win Over Valley Forge

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Eleven players scored at least two points as the Centenary University men's basketball team used a balanced attack to defeat the University of Valley Forge, 104-84 on Monday night.

The Cyclones, who scored 100+ points for the second straight game and third time in five games this season, were led by double-double performances from forwards Billy Veras and D'Angelo Blackmond.

Centenary sprinted out to a 12-4 on a lay-up from Blackmond at the 16-minute mark.

The two teams battled on each end of the court as a three-pointer from Matthew Altamirano at 11:07 pulled Valley Forge to within two, 23-21.

A lay-up from Owen Bradford at 10:37 allowed the visitors to tie the game at 23-23.

Centenary responded with a 9-0 run and pushed its lead to 32-23 with 8:34 showing on the clock. Guard Chris LaBelle had seven of the nine points in that scoring spurt.

A traditional three-point play from forward Kevin DeRaffele at 4:44 gave Centenary a 41-32 edge on the scoreboard.

The two teams continued to battle as a lay-up from forward Antonio Arana as time expired sent the Cyclones into the break with a 53-45 advantage.

Centenary scored six of the first nine points in the second half and led 59-48 with 18:17 to play.

A 16-0 run pushed the Cyclones lead to 74-52 with 13:28 showing on the clock. Veras struck for nine points during that run.

The two teams continued to battle as guard Trevor Giordano's bucket at 10:22 put the home team on top, 80-58.

A pair of three-pointers from Giordano pushed Centenary lead to 88-66 with 7:35 showing on the clock.

Late buckets from guard Tyler Clark and forward Eseosa Omoruyi closed out a 104-84 win.

Centenary shot 57.5% from the field and was 13-for-16 from the foul line in the contest. Valley Forge shot 42.5% from the field and was 14-for-23 from the foul line. Centenary held a 48-31 edge in the rebounding battle.

Veras finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds to record his second double-double of the year. Blackmond posted 20 points and 12 rebounds for his third double-double in five games for the Cyclones.

LaBelle added 16 points, six rebounds and five assists while guard Harrison Lucibello finished with 10 points. Giordano came off the bench to score 10 points.

Atlamirano finished with 32 points for Valley Forge.

The Cyclones are off until Saturday, Dec. 4 when they host Rosemont at 2 p.m.
