Red Dragon Men Pull Away in Second Half of 83-63 Win at Elmira

ELMIRA, N.Y. – Cortland pulled away over the final nine minutes and the Red Dragons defeated host Elmira, 83-63, in men's basketball non-league action. 
 
Cortland (2-2) had four players score in double figures in the victory. Eric Edwards (Binghamton) hit 8-of-12 shots from the field and all six of his free throws and finished with 22 points, five rebounds and a career-high five assists. Kareem Lubin (South Blooming Grove/Washingtonville) registered career bests of 20 points and 12 rebounds, Riley McEvoy (Homer) made five 3-pointers and ended with career highs of 17 points, four steals and two blocks, and Austin Grunder (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) added 12 points and 13 rebounds. Humberto Cabrera (Millbrook) amassed career high of eight assists and seven points. 
 
Elmira (0-4) got 22 points and four assists from Bryan Adams and 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including 3-of-4 from the arc, from Dylan Jacob. Rashaad Nursh chipped in with nine points, nine rebounds and two blocks, and Harry Ravitz finished with eight points, 11 rebounds and three assists. 
 
Cortland led by as many as eight points in the first half, but Elmira closed to within 33-31 at halftime. The Soaring Eagles tied the game twice in the second half, the last at 46-46 on an Adams 3-pointer with 14:23 left. 
 
McEvoy hit a layup and a 3-pointer to put the Red Dragons ahead 51-46 with 13:00 left, and the margin was still at five at 58-53 with nine minutes on the clock. Lubin's layup with 8:28 remaining and 3-pointer at the 8:01 mark gave Cortland a 10-point lead, and the margin remained at eight or more the rest of the way. Cortland outscored Elmira by a 16-5 count over the final five and a half minutes to create the final 20-point advantage. 
 
Cortland returns to action on Nov. 30 when it opens SUNYAC play at Oswego in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
