Hood wins opener in MMI Tip Off Tournament

FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College's Mason Wang scored 15 points in the second half as the men's basketball team pulled away from Wilson in the opener of the MMI Tip Off Tournament 77-64. 

Inside the Box Score

  • Wang scored 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting, going 3-of-8 from 3-point range. The senior added five rebounds, three steals and three assists. 
  • Bryce Butler had an excellent debut for the Blazers, finishing with 15 points, nine rebounds and four steals. The graduate student went 6-of-10 shooting, including 2-for-5 from 3-point range. 
  • Evan Wang had 11 points. 

How it Happened

  • Butler scored six points during a 13-2 run for Hood over the game's first six and a half minutes. 
  • A bucket by Evan Wang stretched the lead to 22-10 with 9:12 left in the half before the Phoenix made a run. Darren Green knocked down a 3-pointer that sparked a 15-3 Wilson run, tying the game at 25-25 on a layup by Warrick Godwin Jr. at 3:20. 
  • Hood led by one before Wang scored the final five points of the half as the Blazers took a 35-29 lead into halftime. 
  • Two free throws from Antonio Bussey brought Wilson within 41-39 early in the second half. Six different Blazers scored during a 17-5 run that followed over the next seven minutes as Hood took a 58-44 lead an a 3-pointer by Evan Wang.
  • Green hit another 3-pointer for Wilson later to cut the Blazers' lead to single digits, 64-55, with 5:24 on the clock, but Mason Wang scored five straight points to push the lead to 14 less than a minute later. 
  • Bussey scored with less than a minute left to make it a nine-point game again at 73-64 before Hood made four free throws in the final 37 seconds to seal the win. 

Analysis

  • The two teams combined to shoot 56 free throws. Hood finished 21-of-33 (64 percent), while the Phoenix went 14-of-23 (61 percent). 
  • Wilson outrebounded the Blazers 41-35. 
  • Hood committed just 14 turnovers and held a 26-15 edge in points off turnovers.

For the Opponent

  • Godwin and Green led Wilson with 11 points apiece. 
  • Darryl Garib was a point short of a double-double and led all players with 12 boards. Daeshon Johnson added five assists. 

Notes

  • Hood improves to 1-0 on the season, while the Phoenix are 0-1. 
  • Randolph-Macon defeated Carnegie Mellon 70-61 in the other first round contest.
