Sewanee Ends 2021 Season with Weekend Split of Lynx

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The University of the South men's basketball team had some "March Madness" of its own, as they took on the Lynx of Rhodes College over the weekend from Juhan Gymnasium. After dropping Saturday's contest, 80-68, the Tigers edged the visitors on Sunday, 66-63.

HOW IT HAPPENED, SATURDAY
-The two teams went back-and-forth in the first 10 minutes of the contest. However, the Rhodes, trailing 23-20 at the 9:34 mark in the half, finished the half on a 20-4 run to swing the lead to 13 for the visitors.

-The deficit would balloon to a game-high 17 early in the second half, but the Tigers edged the Lynx in the second half, outscoring them, 41-40.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Jordan Warlick recorded a double-double with a 17-point, 11-rebound performance.

-Joey Knox added 15 points, while Mackie Garwood and Colin Kahl each added 10 points. Garwood also contributed four dimes, while Kahl posted six boards.

RHODES KEY STATISTICS
-Koki Wiley led all scorers with 26 points on 9-of-16 shooting, and TJ Clayton recorded 11 boards off the bench.

-Mac James added 13 points, while Arness Georgetown II posted 11 points and nine boards.

HOW IT HAPPENED, SUNDAY
-In the season finale, Sewanee got out to a quick start, netting the first five points before Rhodes was forced to burn a timeout 85 seconds into the game.

-The Lynx made it a contest but tied at 21 with 8:30 left in the opening half, the Tigers returned the favor. After the Tigers went cold in the latter half of the period on Saturday, the Lynx did just that on Sunday. The hosts pushed the lead to double figures, 42-32, at the halftime horn.

-Rhodes came out of the locker room strong in the second half, cutting the deficit to one, 50-49, with 13:50 left in regulation. However, Sewanee never relinquished the lead and pushed the lead back to double figures, 64-53, with five minutes remaining in regulation.

-The Lynx made an attempted comeback, and thanks to a Koki Wiley layup with 1:06 left in the contest, the visitors made it a one-possession score again.

-After back-to-back Sewanee possessions that ended in turnovers, Wiley again recorded the layup and made the game a one-point deficit, 64-63, with 30 seconds left.

-Deciding not to foul, Rhodes easily let Joey Knox score a quick bucket to put the good guys up three, 66-63, as Rhodes inbounded for what would be the final time. Thanks to strong defense by the Purple and White, Wiley heaved a game-tying three with less than two seconds left, but it fell short.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Jordan Warlick recorded his second double-double in as many days and the third of the shortened year with a team-high 19 points and a game-high 11 boards. Additionally, he added four blocks.

-Joey Knox dropped 10 of his 17 points in the second half, while Jack Holloway recorded eight points, five rebounds, three dimes and two blocks.

-As a team, Sewanee posted a 24-of-53 performance from the field (45.3%). In the first half, the Purple and White shot 50% from the floor (14-of-28).

-Cole Perusek and Mack Garwood each added eight points.

RHODES KEY STATISTICS
-Arness Georgetown II led the field with 20 points on 9-of-16 shooting.

-Koki Wiley recorded 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
