Strong second half helps W&J earn PAC win at Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson men's basketball team scored 50 second half points to earn a hard-fought 81-72 victory over Grove City in Presidents' Athletic Conference game Wednesday night at the College Arena. 
 
The victory improves W&J to 6-2 in the league standings and helps secure a home game in the PAC Tournament Quarterfinals on Tuesday, March 16. The loss snaps Grove City's 13-game home winning streak. The Wolverines are 4-3 in league games. 
 
Four Presidents scored in double figures during another balanced offensive performance. Cameron Seemann (Loveland, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) led the charge with 18 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Kyran Mitchell (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) finished with 17 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. 
 
Nicholas Campalong (Sewickley, Pa./Ambridge) tallied 16 points and a team-high seven assists. Alexander Skowron (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) was a perfect 5-of-5 from the field and netted a season-high 12 points off the bench.  
 
Trailing by nine points (48-39) with 15:03 to play in the second half, the Presidents worked themselves back into the game. Sparked by strong bench play from Campalong and Skowron, W&J used a 16-8 run to close the deficit within a single point (56-55) at the 9:23 mark. Less than two minutes later, Seemann drained a triple to even the score at 60-60. 
 
After the teams traded baskets to make the score 62-62, the Presidents used an 11-0 run to pull away for the victory. Mitchell, who entered the game just 2-of-18 from behind the three-point line, buried back-to-back triples to give W&J a 68-62 edge with 4:11 left. A layup by Campalong pushed the lead to eight at the 3:06 mark. Campalong helped W&J seal the deal at the free throw line, as the senior converted 7-of-9 attempts in the final 1:07. 
 
Grove City built an early 19-11 advantage and led for the vast majority of the first half. W&J scored seven of the final nine first half points to remain within striking distance. Erik Meiners led the Wolverines with 17 points in the loss. 
 
W&J held advantages in points off of turnovers (21-12) and points in the paint (42-32). W&J converted 45 percent of its field goal attempts. W&J was 21-of-34 at the free throw line while Grove City attempted just six shots from the charity stripe. 
 
W&J concludes the regular season when they host Thiel College on Wednesday, March 10. The Presidents and Tomcats will tip off at 6 p.m. from Salvitti Family Gymnasium.
