Tommie men ride 3-ball to road win at Augsburg

Junior guard Riley Miller scored 18 of his game-high 20 points in the first half and junior guard Anders Nelson scored all 18 of his points in the second half to lead No. 7-ranked St. Thomas to an 81-70 road win at Augsburg in Saturday afternoon's MIAC men's basketball game at Si Melby Hall.

Sophomore forward Will Engels made all six shots he took in his first career start and closed with 12 points and seven boards in 25 minutes for the Purple (4-0 overall, 3-0 MIAC).

Miller made six treys and also added five rebounds and four assists. Burt Hedstrom shipped in nine points, six rebounds and five assists, and Ryan Lindberg had eight points and four assists.

Coach John Tauer's Tommies shot 54 percent from the field and made 15-of-32 from behind the arc, with six different shooters sinking at least one trey. They are averaging more than 12 made threes a game and converting at 42 percent.

St. Thomas' six-game winning streak dating back to last postseason includes five wins away from Schoenecker Arena.

St. Thomas, which led 40-28 at halftime, built its cushion at large as 23 points in the second half. The Auggies (2-3, 1-3) whittled away and cut the deficit to 74-64 in the final 3:00 but was unable to get closer.

Matt Carik and Will Schmidt each scored 14 points for Augsburg.

St. Thomas continues a busy stretch with a home test Monday night against St. Mary's.
