Cold shooting hinders Presidents in setback to Waynesburg

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's basketball made just 18 field goals and shot 28.6 percent from the field in a 61-55 loss to visiting Waynesburg University in a Presidents' Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon.

The loss snapped the Presidents' four-game winning streak. W&J falls to 5-2 in 2021. The win improves Waynesburg to 3-4.

Things started well for the Presidents, as the host team jumped out to an early 8-0 advantage behind a layup by Cameron Seemann (Loveland, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) and pair of three-pointers by Kyran Mitchell (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic).

W&J hit on three of its five shot attempts but went cold from there. The Presidents converted just four of their next 26 shots to close the first half at just 22.6 percent.

A jumper by Seemann extended the W&J lead to 13-6 at the 11:53 mark. The Presidents then were held without a field goal for more than seven minutes, as a layup by Seemann extended the lead to 18-15 with 4:27 remaining in the opening half. Waynesburg registered five of the final seven points to trim the deficit to 21-20 at the break.

An early triple by Isaiah Alonzo gave Waynesburg a 23-21 lead just seconds into the second half. The two teams began to exchange scores with neither team leading by more than two points for the next six minutes. A three-pointer by Okikiola Agbale (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) gave W&J a 32-29 edge with 14:36 left in the second half. Waynesburg countered with an 8-0 run to pull in front at 37-32. Consecutive threes by Matt Popeck and Alonzo strengthened the Waynesburg lead to 49-39 with just 4:39 showing on the clock.

Despite the deficit and their offensive struggles, the Presidents put together a late run to get back into the game. Trailing by eight with 49 seconds left, Mitchell converted a layup and Seemann nailed a jumper to trim the deficit to 54-49 with 39 seconds left. Zach Queen (Jeannette, Pa./Hempfield) and Seemann made consecutive threes to close the gap to just one point (56-55) with 16 seconds left. After a pair of free throws by Waynesburg, the Presidents would have a shot to tie the game in the final 10 seconds. However, a contested shot by Seemann was off its mark and Waynesburg closed out the victory with three late three throws.

Seemann finished with 23 points to lead W&J offensively. Mitchell added 14 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Jake Livingston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) pulled in a season-high 13 rebounds.

Alonzo posted 23 points and 16 rebounds for Waynesburg to lead all players in both categories.

W&J looks to rebound when they travel to Grove City on Wednesday, March 3. Start time is slated for 5:30 p.m. The game will be a featured broadcast by the PAC Sports Network at pacstream.net.
