Covenant's Crumly eclipses 1,500 career points, but Scots fall at LaGrange

LAGRANGE, Ga. -- Will Crumly became the ninth player in Covenant men's basketball program history to eclipse 1,500 career points with his 18 points, but host LaGrange used a late 7-0 run to pull away for a 76-69 victory over the Scots on Thursday night inside Mariotti Gym.

Crumly went 9-of-15 from the field and scored 12 of his team-high 18 points in the second half as Covenant (7-5, 3-2 USA South) erased a double-digit deficit. The senior is just the ninth player in program history to achieve the feat and the first since Josh Suddath '07 did it during the 2006-07 season.

Covenant trailed for the majority of the contest, and was down by 11 early in the second half, before a second half rally fell short. Down 40-29 just a minute into the second half, the Scots used a 14-2 run to take their first lead of the night at 43-42 after a Crumly bucket, assisted by Chris Barnette, with 13:26 left in regulation.

The teams traded ties and baskets over the next nine minutes of play with neither side leading by more than four. A Daevon Platt layup knotted the score at 62 with 4:22 remaining, but it was LaGrange that had the final answer.

The host Panthers scored seven straight, aided by a pair of buckets from Ronald Youngblood and a 3-pointer from Bershard Edwards that gave LaGrange a 69-62 lead with 1:30 left.

Covenant quickly cut that deficit to three (69-66) on a Barnette jumper and a Jackson Fitzgerald layup after the Scots stole LaGrange's inbounds pass. Two free throws by LaGrange with 55 seconds left brought the margin back to five and, although the Scots trimmed the deficit to three twice, Covenant would not have possession with a chance to tie the game.

Covenant shot 52.5 percent (32-of-61) but uncharacteristically struggled from beyond the arc, going just 3-of-16 from deep. Barnette finished with 15 points, seven rebounds, and three assists while Brady Palmer had 11 points and three assists. Platt added 10 points off the bench and Promise Igbanu had eight points.

LaGrange (5-2, 5-2 USA South) jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first half. Youngblood topped 20 points for a second straight game with his game-high 21 points. Julian Cameron and Lincoln Anderson had 13 points apiece. Edwards hit four 3-pointers and ended the night with 12 points.

The Panthers connected on 43.3 percent (26-of-60) from the field, but made 10 3-pointers and hit 14-of-17 at the foul line.
