Mallory Helps #1 R-MC Men’s Hoops Rally Past Ferrum

FERRUM, Va. – Sophomore Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) scored the final nine points for the Yellow Jackets, including a three-pointer with two seconds left to ice it, as the top-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team rallied for a 61-57 ODAC victory at Ferrum.

How it Happened:

  • A jumper by senior Lorenzo Woods (Burlington, N.C./Burlington School) started the scoring and a pair of layups by sophomore Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) and a bucket by senior David Funderburg (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) gave the Yellow Jackets an early 8-2 advantage seven minutes into the contest. A layup by Woods stopped a 5-point spurt by the Panthers and gave R-MC a 10-7 edge midway through the first half. Ferrum took its first lead at 11-10 before a three-pointer from junior Ian Robertson (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) put the Yellow Jackets up 13-11 with eight minutes left. R-MC trailed 23-21 before a triple by senior Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbiship Spalding) and a pair of layups by Mallory gave the visitors a 28-23 advantage at intermission.
  • Ferrum had the first bucket of the second half before a trey by Anthony and a jumper by Woods gave R-MC a 33-25 lead two minutes in. The Panthers pulled within three before a jumper by Woods gave the Yellow Jackets a 49-44 edge midway through the period. Ferrum had six straight points to go up 50-49 with six minutes left. Woods hit another jumper as the visitors reclaimed the lead at 51-50. A 5-1 run gave the Panthers a 55-52 lead with just under three minutes remaining. A Mallory layup with 2:34 left pulled R-MC within one, and a Mallory jumper put R-MC ahead for good at 56-55 with two minutes left. A dunk by Mallory put the Yellow Jackets up 58-55 with one minute remaining. A bucket by Ferrum make it a one-point contest with 32 seconds left. With the shot clock running down, Mallory buried a three-pointer to secure the 61-57 victory.
